All good stuff but the Td4 doesn't use a pg1 gearbox (Now they are ****e!!!!). Td4 uses a getrag box, difficult gear selection is not normally a problem with these and I've only ever replaced boxes because of bearing noise, not poor selection.

I reckon the problem is more with the clutch as these are ****! hydraulics cause problems as do the pressure plates, flywheels are also crap, causing clutch judder.

Hello,

Very interesting how this thread has developed!!

I took the car to my local independent (very nice place and a pleasure to do business with). Went for a test drive and they reckon it is the hydraulics on the clutch. Probably a small leak. Going back next week to have the hydraulics checked and the "slave cylinder" which they say is relatively easy to replace done first. Failing that the "master cylinder" would need doing but this involves removing the gear box etc etc.

Knowing my luck it will be the master. Let you know next week.

you got it round the wrong way, slave is in the gearbox and the master is on the bulkhead, if there is brake fluid dripping out of the bellhousing then the slave is your problem, no leaks but poor pedal feel is normally the master cylinder

Clutchdust is right, poor pedal 'FEEL' ie (if the pedal travel is crap) it will be the master cylinder which is attached to your clutch pedal and then to the bulkhead.

Its a complete item that can be changed in about 1 hour max.

If you look behind the engine you can see the master cylinder attached to the bulkhead, it has a small pop off Black lid which will allow you to top it up with brake/clutch fluid, this can also make a difference to a poor pedal feel which may make a diffrence to your gear selection.

To bring this thread to a close, a faulty Master cyinder was the culprit. Replaced and now back to normal. Thanks to those who read this thread and happy motoring
