Hello Everyone,

I am having difficulty, especially when cold to select gears on my 2002 TD4 manual gear box. No grating, just very stiff when pushing the gear stick into gear. Clutch doesn't feel soggy and it gets better but not perfect after a good run. Any thoughts from the experts out there and thanks for looking and your help.

Regards

I recently modified the engine mounts especially the hydromount on the gearbox. Its now a rubber bush

Gear changes are alot better since then, still to post pics in relevant thread. The gear selector itself could have worn rubber bushes.

or the gearbox oil is thick - maybe time for an oil change or clutch not depressing far enuf?

come on LR - anyone wud think yu did summat else durin the day ;)

I had a similar problem sometime back. When i was changing into 1st 3rd and 5th it was incredibly stiff. Then one morning i noticed a leak under the car and when i got it up on the ramps i discovered that the gear linkage was actually catching a cooliant pipe. I have moved the pipe and problem gone.

Dunno if this is what is up with yours but it is another thing to check.

True oil may be shot but the gear linkage is sub-standard on all PG1 boxes

If you think the FL is bad with gear changes try driving an MGF/TF with ropey cable connections. Mike Satur's MG does a slick kit for this and it makes one hell of a difference.

It seems that LR just threw any old component on the FL (project CB40) from the Rover scrap bins. I fully intend to replace the rubber bushes on the FL gear linkage with something more superior.

Anyway, I know I need to get out more but modifying engine mounts keeps me off the streets ;)

its rod change with the mod being a UJ to go onto the gearbox - should be dead easy to alter rod and use same system.

here is where the write-up is - I didnt find the offset necessary and the UJ fitted directly on to the end of the shaft - but a Hippoo - a whole new ball game:p

I like it MHM!!

Its the lower arm that looks to be well supported, better than the FL.

The support provides additional leverage for a more effortless gear change.

Nice SS exhaust
