Kai has removed the diff from an old axle that he is thinking of painting, rebuilding and putting on his 109.

He has asked me how to assess... by looking at the removed diff... whether it is a good one or is worn etc.

I have no idea (as most of you know), there are no teeth missing, the oil has almost no traces of swarf when we drained it, movement seems nice... but are there any definitive measurements or tests that we can carry out to reassure him that he is fitting a good one?

pinion teeth are good idicator as they get 4.7 or 3.5 times more work than crown wheel ,shouldnt have score lines in them should look like polished metal ,very little backlash when rocking crown wheel ,no end float on diff flange ,smooth to turn

As above - any wear (polished area) should be in the centre area of the tooth with no ridges at the sides.
