Different coloured rego plates.

Gidday all,
I watch Wheeler Dealer on Pay TV in Australia...quite an informative and interesting show.
Noticed recently that the vehicles have a yellow registration plate on the rear and a white registration plate on the front.
Can someone put me out of my misery and tell me why?

Pretty much sums it up, we are very strict on reg plates in the UK and it actually works out quite well, you can tell vehicle age and are of first registration straight off the plates, it also helps identify what way round parked cars are on the side of the road I suppose

So dippy people can tell if its back or front basicly and as redhand says its law

or if the cars the right way up

It#s actually because in the UK ya can't show a whte light or reflector to the rear. so Yellow was chosen instead.

Yep but ya couldn't when Number plates regs were introduced. Vehikkles din't have going backwards lamps..

was that in the olden days when the little arm would pop out so you knew which way they were turning.
should never stopped those you could lenghten them and get cyclist with them.

Remind me wot colour are the lamps that light up sed number plates?

In uk a reflective surface is classed as a light for purposes of direction , eg you can only have white to rear when reversing , and only red to front when "special lamp" eg fire emeergency services . High conspicuity markings on trucks follow similar pattern eg red or yellow to rear white or yellow to side HTSH

Red lights are not front facing on emergency vehicles. They are rear facing a dnote a blockedlane. Highways agency traffic oficers often uwe them ilegally when travelling. They should only be used when stationary.

Sorry sunshine , Illuminated red cross still legal on ambulance and the other is a red beacon on a fire vehicle

Thanks guys for the explanations.Here in Aus we have the same coloured plate front and rear. I can see how the different colours work now. Cheers to all!!!!

But they is pointing down....or sideways.......never backwards

I has got proper pressed black an silver plates.....none of this nasty plastic sh1t
