Getting a tan in Q8
Hello all,

I have seen that the diffs from an early Discovery can fit in a Series 3. My diffs need rebuilt but and I was wondering if the ring and pinion from a Discovery will fit the Series 3 diff. My way of thinking is that since I have to replace everything anyway just put the ring and pinion on the parts list and use original diff. Just looking to put the taller gearing in.

To go a bit further with that part, would it be worth my time since I already have the overdrive unit and only a 2.5 diesel? Thanks for the help.

from experience, swap the whole diff, range rover diffs will up rate it with help of the overdrive :)

rebuilding diffs is not that simple, they (as are gear boxs) are shimmed out to match the castings, the end floats vary , so not one diffs the same, if they are not spot on, or close enough it will reduce the diff life, only 20 mins to swap one,

if yer still interested in rebuilding a diff il find me pics of the ones i did

because the pinion is quite a bit bigger in the 3.54 disco diff compared to 4.7 diff ,crown wheel wouldnt fit on your diff carrier and fit in the housing , diff carriers can only be interchanged when both diffs use the same carrier bearings ,which only happens with suffix g or h series axles which iirc dont have filler plug in the diff housing

I've got a front diff off my 109 Series 2A going spare, will be listing on ebay when I get round to it. I bought a recon one (spur of the moment thing) thinking mine was shagged, turns out it was the prop that had loads of play. The one that came out is really tight and with the painted internals it seems like it's a recon. I can get you photos later if you like...

I would like photos. Would work in a Series 3? Then there is also the post to Spain, that may be a killer there.

yes look like 10 spline rover diffs , might be worth fitting a oil filler/level plug in before fitting new diff in the rear axle

Sorry, been busy. Will try and get a photo up tomorrow if you still want it. Delivery to Spain will be about £50-60 on a three day service.

I have a couple more questions for you fine folks. Can you clarify the defender/discovery diffs will fit. I know you have said so but then there are adverts like this posting in EbayUK.

LAND ROVER DEFENDER AND DISCOVERY 10 SPLINE DIFF | eBay

What do the diffs weigh? I can get them posted fairly reasonable if they are under 7lbs american weight. Thanks for putting up with my questions.

10 spline is old 90/110 stuff now are 24 spline defender/disco stuff. And they weigh more than 7 pounds.

any lr 10 spline diff will fit ,unless an early rrc 3.54 diff you wont have an oil filler in diff housing whih may require you to fit one in your rear case ,more like 20 kg than 7 lbs

Whoops. Sorry about the weight #'s looking to stay below 70lbs. I am trying to fit into a 1980 Land Rover Santana. It is a Series 3. Thanks for the help. Fitting a new filler plug won't be an issue. Just want to make sure before I spend the money. Thanks again.
