I noticed some oil leaking from the diff front seal, so I thought I would check the oil level just in case. I removed the filler plug and a fair bit of oil ran out, so I jacked the rear end up for a bit more room, and put the filler plug back in. Could too much oil in the diff cause a leak?

Thanks for quick reply. Could the leak now stop because of the correct oil level, or could the oil seal be damaged?

the "seal" is only a tube of the silicone sealant for oil I have just done my rear diff as an advisory on my MOT just make sure all the casing is clear of any old seal ,I took all three diff bushes off and then you can get at all of the bolts and the job was easy compared to other jobs, there is no pressure in the diff so a little extra oil will not harm it but always just let the excess come out of the filler plug and you will be safe ,if you are going to do the job then get an old washing up bowl under it ,mine had been leaking and I measured how much was left in and it was just half a ltr and it takes about 6/8ths.
