You need a bar to push against it on the fulcrum to take the belt off, how easy did it retract?
It was kind of easy not silly, as I say belt came loose a couple of times with the new tensioner always assumed was me not installing it properly. Out of warranty so will just order a new one and move on as lesson learned. You need a bar to push against it on the fulcrum to take the belt off, how easy did it retract?

Seems fine to me. How did you top up oil in tensioner? How do you check the crank pulley damper?
Fire it up briefly without belt on and watch the motion?
The only way I can think of is to gently remove the top seal. The tensioner on mine certainly feels like it's oil damped, it takes a lot of force to release tension on the belt and it seems to move with more than just spring resistance.Seems fine to me. How did you top up oil in tensioner?

Crank pulley usually rattles like mad at idle if it's knackeredOk cheers will have a look.
Best way to check crank pulley damper is ok?
Don't quite know what I need to look for?
See rangerollerdt's note just not sure.
Ahh ok lol. In that case then damper is fine quiet as a mouse. Think tensioner needs top up. Thanks you.I was asking the others how to check lol.
As Data says the top comes off but don’t put it down in its side, fill it & fit it. Some may ooze out when tension is reapplied, wipe it then you know it’s full.
Correct is 9.5 and done that with the filter just surprised who much oil that is9.5 Litre iirc, prime the oil filter in the housing to reduce starvation firing up

Blimey. You still got a P38?My defender would go through oil like fuel, every tank. Atleast with bmw unit it stays in there.
Good point. Where do you purchase them from normally?I buy it by the 20l drum gives you two changers and a top up and works out a lot cheaper.
Yes same one I’ve always had. The one in my avatar. Not changed anything the old grotty engine from my early posts is the same orange one.Blimey. You still got a P38?
What grade oil do you use in yours? 10w40?Yes same one I’ve always had. The one in my avatar. Not changed anything the old grotty engine from my early posts is the same orange one.
