Spoke to Ashcrofts yesterday who promised to phone me back that same day. I got no phone call so just spoke to them again earlier this afternoon and they have promised to get a call back to me this afternoon so we shall see what happens!

Hi wills sorry to read your woes & difficulties with Ashcrofts. I haven't yet got to the bottom of it but here's my contribution. After living with the problem & having a few (very costly) opinions, the car very suddenly misbehaved uncharacteristically on a cold start up and threw up two faults ;
ALTERNATOR FAULT then GEARBOX FAULT. The trusty indie put on Rovacom ,whilst saying a weak battery can cause both these messages, the diagnosis then leading to FAULTY CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR. A ha they says together, that adds up , dodgy signals giving the gearbox dodgy info.can cause the issue described. So tomorrow a.m. the sensor gets replaced , check on the battery & will post back.
I'm hoping for a miracle & that one or both these issues are the root cause and that it may be the elusive reason that we're all looking for!
Hold your breath.

ok, they rang back this afternoon and they want me to take my RR back to the garage who fitted the box. I asked why and they want them to look over it and drive it to confirm the fault still exists.

I told them I had already done this on numerous occasions, and that every inch of the drive train had been checked for any defects/fault and that none had been found. They then asked "has it been on the diagnostic computer at their place", I told them "yes" to which they replied, "has it been hooked up since the last valve body change" to which I replied with "no but I have my own Rovacom machine and have had it hooked up and no faults exist". I then went on to explain what I had been told by another specialist about torque converter faults and how they could cause this. This was dismissed straight off because they supply a new torque converter with every box. I asked them would they even be willing to check this theory out but was told I need to take it back to my specialist who fitted the box for him to confirm the fault exists and they can then take it from there. At that point I said "ok" and left the conversation at that.

I am totally banging my head against a brick wall here and its becoming extremely frustrating having to jump through all these hoops just to get to the same conclusion. I had originally planned to not post on this whole saga and just let you guys know if the problem was solved but I'm now 'reet pi$$d off' and just want this damn problem sorting!

I shall definitely keep this thread updated with how it all ends up.

GGG - Fingers crossed that this sorts your problem out, I, and im sure others will certainly be interested to know - good luck!

Just a thought but has anybody had this fault on a v8 or does it only seem to affect the diesels ? If it is only diesels then why ? Is it a different gearbox ?

The 2.5 diesel and the 4.0 petrol share the same gearbox so its not the fact its a different type of gearbox

Update is that the gearbox is still flaring from 1st to 2nd Had the crankshaft position sensor replaced & car runs so sweetly, battery ok ,but hesitant changes just the same.
I have had 3 different places drive & diagnose & most reputable one says terminal wear of a primary clutch other general wear for mileage & age best go full replacement & torque converter £1600, they are v.good & trustworthy all the main agents & trade use them.
Other opinion similar but £1200+ for repair kit to clutches & components £1200+
3rd opinion normal wear just live with it till it becomes difficult then deal with it.
Still waiting for a miracle but looks like its try ATF & filter change plus additive & live with it. I would favour the £1600 route but that kind of money in a car that is devaluing to death daily is not a sensible option for me.
Any developments will post back, good luck with the rest.
BTW if anyone wants to know the auto transmission outfit is in Barnsley,S.Yorks, Martin Lowe & they are 100% on the case & very accommodating, deal with all makes & really do come highly recommended

Wills, did you get any joy with Ashcrofts or are you still stuck with the problematic gearbox ?.No one has yet answered as to if the fault is affecting 4.0lt petrols as well as our DHSEs

ok, after much titting about with phone calls Ashcrofts are going to fully replace the box. I don't want to post too much yet as I don't know who might read this forum but as soon as its replaced I will fully update the thread.

I just now hope that I get a good replacement box!

I replaced gearbox oil and filter/seals and mine is now running smooth as silk didnt even put in additives.

I know this thread is old now but would like to know how everyone else got on.

Cheers

:O totally forgot about this thread, yes, I kept the pressure on Ashcrofts and they replaced the box, I won't type out the whole thing again but if you goto...

...you can see the full extent of what happened. The last post I made basically explains everything and what was the supposed cause of the original problem.

The gearbox which I had fitted back in July by Ashcrofts now has around 10,000 miles on it and it seems, so far, fine. I just hope it stays that way.

Let me know if you have any more questions!
