HI Guys my 02 p38 autobox is misbehaving, no faults showing , but going from 1st to 2nd with a pause/jerk /bang depending on speed /foot pressure. Are these boxes resetable or am I in for a shock!"?!?!?

GGG,funny you should have a fault that my DHSE auto has just started to develop last week.As you say, its ok in the other change ups/downs and is smooth in the 1st/2nd changeover sometimes.Really wierd. My RR is a 2000 model. ps. cant even find a gearbox level stick ??. Any advice from anyone will be very welcoming.

gear level stick don't exist.
on gear box is a fill plug that gives you the level.
Mine does same thing only when cold or when hot and accelerating very slowly.
New seals and filters fitted drained and refilled still the same.
No problem when accelerating normally though.

So are the three off us looking at mega bucks for a new gearbox/repair. There must be someone out there who's had this problem sorted/diagnosed, i think its just a case off wait and see !!
Come on guys give us your thoughts.

I shall come out of the woodwork and say I also have exactly the same problem BUT mine is with a recon box from Ashcroft Transmissions. Im currently in the process of trying to get the problem sorted.

I don't really want to go into too much detail as Im still trying to get things sorted but I will let everyone know the outcome.

It seems its a common problem though, luckily my recon box is still under warranty so we shall see what happens and I will report back.

Just to let you know the local retailer didn't stock the transmission fix but every other Lucas product . Just brought a 700ml bottle off Ebay for £12+ £3 p+p. Will be using it asap.

I don't know which gearbox is in the DHSE, but if it's the ZF 4HP24 then it could be the same problem that you get sometimes with the ZF4HP22 box in the Classic.

On the 4HP22 this is often a symptom of the kickdown cable being adjusted incorrectly (too tight), slackening off the cable cured it on mine. There is a little metal crimp on the cable which should be around 1mm away from the cable's outer when the accelerator pedal is fully released.

If the cable is too tight the gearbox will hold gears until you lift fully off the gas for a second or so and change with a thump into the next gear. It will also change down a gear with the slightest provocation.

If the cable is too loose the gearbox will shift into top gear too early and eventually damage the brake bands.

Adjusted correctly the 'box should shift into top gear smoothly at around 45 mph and the torque converted will lock up at around 50-55 mph. I don't know if these roadspeeds are right for a P38 or diesel though, but it's worth a check.

My stop slip turned up last saturday. Has definately made a difference but there is still occasionally a harsh gear change. Will live with it though. Hope yours turns up soon onyx.
