Hi everyone

My transfer box has got really noisy lately and so needs changing my question is:

What transfer boxes from different models will will my lt77 200tdi defender? I have found a few local to me from the 300 tdi disco etc will any of these fit? I know a few linkages etc.. may need swapping over.

Thanks, Ben.

they will all fit even borg warner from rrc ,presumably you have std 1.140 ,you could fit disco 1.222,for better gearing, hand brake linkage is the only thing you will need to look at

well i have been told the defender is 1.4 ratio and the disco are 1.2 so will lower the revs a bit but wont really be a problem will it?

Thanks.

much better unless you do very heavy towing,200 tdi def has rear most hand brake bracket bolts x2 in end of speedo housing disco on side, you can either swap brackets as cables are different or drill 2x 8mm x 1.25 holes

wrong way round, the disco transfer box is higher geared so its taller geared on the road but the low gears are the same, i run one on my 110 for better road speeds.

if you want a good 45000 mile one my spairs up for sale now my 110 is going,,,, £75 iam in notts

yes thats what i ment the 1.2 will be reving less for the same speeds as a 1.4.

So the low range has the same gearing in disco and defender?

Is there anything wrong with that transfer box mark and is it a genuine 45k on it? If it will work with mine then ill be interested.

Thanks.

I'd be interested in it for my 300 tdi 110 if you can wait a week or so for me to get to you and pick it up?

just out of interest, what is cost to fit a transfer box into a defender. ball park figure.

well there arnt really any parts needed really just 2 seals and change the handbrake assembly over thats all.

Hi, I have a Defender 200tdi. If I engage diff lock it seems to stick in diff lock on one occasion the diff lock engaged on its own without me touching the lever.
Any suggestions what might be causing that?

Hi Dieselwheasel,
did you have any problems fitting the hand brake? and does it make much difference to road cruising speed etc? My 200tdi will cruise happily at 60mph At 70 it is OK but fuel consumption increases . I can do simple DIY so I would be looking where I can take one out and one straight back in.

defender 200 tdi t/box has a bracket bolted to side of box and 2x 8mm x1.25 20mm long bolts bolted to rear of speedo housing these two holes will need drilling and tapping as 300 doesnt have them as uses direct to drum cable , otherwise you have to change cable for defender 300 cable and lever in cab, before fitting check operation of hi/low and diff lock ,there is a detent for each (6mm allen screw ) high/low on drivers top rear of box wind in till jams change wind out till changes positively same with diff lock near switch, once fitted both linkages need setting so that both are selected easily as often with both as linkage wears youll get high but not low fully or out of difflock but not in fully etc, diff lock is spring operated in box so needs lever needs to go past point of engagement to get it moving
