I had some spare led bulbs left over so thought id do the speedo, got the old ones out (which broke as i removed them) but the led bulbs dont light up no matter which way the go in.

Any suggestions?

Other instrument lights still working?, Have you tried them directly on a battery to check they work? Once you have proved they are ok it will be time to get the meter out to see if it is the supply or earth that is missing
 
Other thing to look at is the bulb contacts, if they are the bent wire style then some types go along the flat side of the glass and others around the edge, fit the wrong type and the contacts won't connect
 
I think that was the case! I bought some replacement normal bulbs from Halfords and all works fine now. Just couldnt get the LED ones to work, I think the speedo bulbs are slightly different to the rest.

Annoying as I know the LEDs are polarity sensitive!

What type of LED are they? When I bought mine, I bought some from a classic car website, but I can’t remember the name.

I had a similar issue with mine, in that they wouldn’t work in the bulb holder, but did on diode test with the Fluke. After some testing, I worked out that each side of the contact had a positive and negative, and when placed in the holder, shorted out and didn’t light. I had to scratch one side positive and the opposite side negative to make each contact a single pos and neg.
