defender engine or could make it fit

It probably could be made to fit the Defender, and if you are careful, the gearbox should be able to handle the torque. It is a very powerful engine, but not really practical for a road going 4x4. They make their peak power & torque at very low rpm, but don't rev very high at all. You would probably have to fit a Discovery T/B, and even then, at 70 mph the engine would be screaming it's nuts off, and the valves would be bouncing on the bonnet.

But for a good offroader with 190bhp,

Maybe a range rover gear n transfer, axles?
That might work, but it is an awful lot of work, and it still wouldn't make a huge amount of difference, those engines don't rev much above 2500 rpm. which while good for offroad use, will quickly become tiring on the road. There are some very good Turbo Disel engines out there that produce almost as much power, but over a much more useable rev range, and with much better economy too.

They have stuck 6BT cummins in lanrovers (see youtube) .
I have put a 4/98 leyland tractor engine in a 109 (years ago)
Its max revs were 2650 , I had 4.1 diffs and a overdrive , and it would cruise easily at 60mph even with a loaded twin axle trailer, including up hill!! No noisier than a 300tdi ! These are engines that rely on torque , so you have to gear accordingly HTSH
