Is any one aware or has anyone undertaken a defender 2.5 td conversion into a series 3 and can you use the series gearbox and also use the engine mount positions ect?? Im currently runing a 2.25 petrol and after looking at bhp, tourque and at what rpm it all happens it is very simmilar to the td unit. Reason for change is more mpg and cheeper running costs (bio fuel).

Any help much appreciated.

I suspect it more or less mates right on to the gearbox and away you go.

Remember that the clutch centre plate MUST match the splines on the GEARBOX, not the engine.
I think there may be an engine mountings issue to overcome.
Chase the listers about this conversion, as it is inevitable it has been done.

So bolt the oil burner straight to the series box and run it with 2.25 petrol clutch plate? Very similar power output so it should be ok... I think:confused: How do i search for people who have done this conversion on this site???

OHHHHH. So many questions:D

Why limit yourself to a defender engine, there are other conversions which may be better and also run better on WVO, the dahatsu or izuzu would be my chioce,

The 200 TDI will cope with WVO but the daihatsu 2.8 is better i think

A lot of diesel engines would be nice and I have heard the izusu is a great set up as is the 200tdi but with engine cost and conversion parts its racking up the ££££'s not to mention having to upgrade all the drive train and breaks etc. Im just after as straight a swap as possible with minimum fuss and expense.. thanks for the thought though.

2.5td 19J engines are cheap to buy and not at all bad if you can find a decent one. Nice and simple to work on if you need to as well.

have you got a td in your series hughsey? Id just like to hear from some one who has droped this motor in their series so I can get a good idea whats involved and any extra bits that may be needed. I did a search and some one mentions that the timing cover on the diesel fouls the battery tray and the oil bath filter has to be relocated but thats about it. Any help much appreciated.

Ask yer insurance co what they would say, NFU accepted my 2.8 n/a daihatsu but had it been a td they wanted brakes upgraded, the 200 tdi may be viewed as 2 modern to not upgrade brakes. My D 2.8 uses all sIII bits, its the only mod 2 the vehicle, works great. SIII box and axles.

Dont know about cost tho, If the bloke next door has a good engine you trust use it, almost whatever it is, a trusted motor at the right price may decide for you

No I've got one in my 110 though, not as quick as a tdi but better than a 2.5 n/a. The series is about to come indoors for some refurb but will be sticking with the 2.25 petrol it's such a sweet runner and won't be keeping it longterm so economy doesn't matter:D

This is the problem I have. I will be taking a perfectly servicable 2.25 petrol engine out to replace it with an unknown motor. The only reason is the fact that my v8 disco does the same mpg as the series:eek: and id like to use the series for a bit of towing every now and then. I can see mpg droping into single figures whise towing with the series if I dont change it to an oil burner. i'm quite keen on the td unit to get that bit of extra ummph over the n/a unit. Thanks for all your comments every one:D Id still like to here from someone who has done this conversion if there is anyone out there though.

i would go for what you can afford , the 2.5 turbo diesel will go straight in ,just swap the mounts , and clutch friction plate you have to move the battery under the passenger seat , and the exhaust will need to be made to fit , the rad will be fine , just swap the the thermostat top , you can use the air filter , use the old bracket and fix it further down , use the existing wiring , you might have to extend the wire from the starter solinoid , to reach the starter motor , as its pre engaged and has its own solinoid , its the best swap to do , especially if you are new at the game , good luck .

you will also need to remove one stud from the fly whhel housing. if its currently petrol you will als need a return fuel line. exaust is complicated n all. me mates has a transit silecer stait of the turbo at about a 45 degree angle down, poking outa the near side wing.

thats a good site, nearly got me enthusiastic about my old heap with a knackerd petrol lump!

reet folks - having read those links it seems to boil down to....

fit a V8 fur the best power distribution but it requires body mods and an installation kit, making it a more expensive change.

or

fit a 200tdi if yu wanna have an easy fix but blow up series gearboxes on a regular basis.

any thought or feedback on your ideas?

how easy is it to swap a 200tdi disco engine and boxes at the same time?

reet yu wasters - as none of yu know or have put a tdi in a series i suppose none of yu know wots involved in fitting a disco box and tbox into a series either?

prop shaft shortening, gearbox mounts etc?

why is it whenever i need sum knowledgeable techies wot know there stuff - yu all disappear back into the woodwork?
