N/A 2.5 DIESEL - DRIVING EXPERIENCE- WHAT ARE THEY LIKE?

Hi all, I have had many Land Rovers over the years including Series with standard four-cylinder petrol engines and Defender and Discovery with 2.5 turbocharged. I am now looking at a 90 with the 2.5 normally aspirated diesel – what should I expect on a test drive? Is this going to be really slow compared to a 2.5 turbocharged and how are they for irregular use? I assume from a maintenance point of view it's all going to be fairly simple.

Any comments would be much appreciated, thanks
 
Not driven one, but I would assume progress will be stately.

Chassis and bulkhead are the main areas to look at, engine is almost irrelevant in the scheme of things.
 
Not completely the same, but i looked at a 2.25 diesel before i got my 2.25 petrol.
It was the noise that put me off and i didn't even drive it. It wasn't just the diesel rattle.. it made the whole car rattle, including me when i sat in it
I understand the 2.5NAD isn't that much more refined

67hp, it'll be slow. Slower than a Series as it weighs more, although you'll have 5 gears. Should run smooth enough, not the most refined, even less so if it is ex-mil as they are very basic. Also expect there to be no PAS as this engine didn't normally have it.

Unless it is CHEAP or you have a very specific reason to want this specification, I'd suggest there are probably better specification Land Rovers available. Of course you can mod one of these, lots have. But unlikely to be cheaper overall.

67bhp when it was new, all of 67bhp!
 
Thanks for all the responses – some good advice in there, I don't have high expectations for the test drive but let's see!
 
My 86 had power steering, 110 sw and I fitted 265 75 16 tyres AND a disco transfer box! Drove fine , I liked it anyway. That engine messed up (my fault) so I fitted a 200 tdi as they were easier to get than another nad at the time. Was around 2007 though so maybe I'm looking back with Rose tinted specs at the nad engine, most of my driving then was around town but I don't recall any memorable issues. I had completely rebuilt it though with recon injectors and new rings so all the power was there.
 
I had a 90 with the NA 2.5 years ago. I would have to agree with the above, it was slow. It would work up to about 50-55 on a decent road but don't bother trying to overtake, you need two miles of clear road to get round anything.
It would go up hills but even slower.
As you can see from the above it was slow..........

not sure you made it clear that it will be slow
