Defender downpipe in a Disco Tdi 300

Hi all, well that job is finally finished and I don't ever want to do it again, but, I now have a catt-less Disco !!

I finished last night and was too tired to do a proper evaluation on the change, so after modifying-out a small rattle I can now report that - IT'S WORTH DOING;

Just been on a test drive with 'er indoors and she said "it feels quieter and easier running now" and she's not wrong.

I'm particularly pleased with slower speed acceleration, you know, when you're pulling out of a side road for instance. Also, round our way there are lots of small country roads, almost tracks, where you don't want to be doing much more than 25-30mph and the car used to feel really heavy and sluggish, now she doesn't.

So, overall, cost of downpipe £21.50+vat from Paddocks, 5 bloody and tiring hours to fit, but actually, well worth it.

I'm pleased with the change.

Now, does anybody know where I can get a Disco straight-through centre section? Not a Defender one because they have flange style fittings at both ends and the Disco centre section has a flange/mandrel at one end and male/female at the other??

Why didnt you just buy the disco downpipe with the flexible section,but without the particulate filter - just bolts straight on.

The Defender one "just bolts in", once you've got it place !!!!

The reason why I bought the Defender one is that it costs £21.50+vat as opposed to the Disco one at about £60+vat !!

Hi Big

Told you it was worth doing didn't I ?

You did do as I said didn't you and put PLENTY of WD on for a good couple of days?

Those bolts are well tricky to get at too particularly if you got big arms and hands like me!

As for the middle section, theyre quite pricey you know, I did mine with a metre length on Pipe I bought from my landy parts place and it only cost a tenner, took middle box section out, cut the box out keeping the connections at both end, and ground a length of upipe long enough to fill the gap, clamped it at bothe ends and bolted the section back in, jobs a gud un. Should really have welded it but its as good as.

I'll try and upload you some photos its a pretty neat job and sounds and goes a treat.

Hi Girve, YES you were right !!!!

It wasn't a problem getting the fixings undone at all - I'd prepared them earlier in the week.

It was getting the bastid thing in place !!!!!!!!

I'd lifted the chassis, but it took me ages to get the thing into position. Eventually I had to take off a bracket that holds some oil pipes in place and then with a gentle attack from my 2lb persuader, she's in !!

Next is the centre section and as you say cutting the box out whilst leaving the hangers available and a bit of straight pipe would seem to be the way to go, but I've got my Contrôle Technique this week, so I'll do it after that.

So do I girve, so do I. It's part of the process of putting it on french plates.

The CT (Contrôle Technique) is only every 2 yrs here, so once you've got through clean, you're good to go for 2 yrs which is great.

"Wish me luck as you wave me goodbye," etc etc ...................old war song!!!!

Really want to do this to my disco, so you would recomend using a defender down pipe? and whats the best thing to do for the mid section?

I thoroughly reccomend you do the de-cat downpipe thing, the only choice is between the Disco flexy one at £60+vat or the Defender non-flexy one at £21.25+vat.

Having run mine for a little while now, I think I might just go and buya Disco flexy one, as I think I'm getting more NVH than before.


The choice, as they say, is yours - but just do it !!!!!:D :D

Just to update you Girve, she flew through her French MOT. The limit here is 3 somethings & my car was 0.8 somethings, so about a quarter of the max pollutants permitted.

Joy is unconfined. She seems nippier and better on juice. The only tiny downside is a little more NVH, so I might at some stage spring for a Disco flexy one, MAYBE ;) :D :D :D
