hi there,

im having a spot of bother with a twin choke weber carb from a 1985 90 defender (2.5 petrol version) basically the engine runs fine on tickover and on full revs but in midrange just cuts out and dies (sounds like its being starved of something) I called the AA man and he reckons that i have a carb diaphragm that needs replacing, and so i took off the car, cleaned it all out and had a look at the diaphragm and would certainly agree that it looks like it needs replacing! I then put the carb back on and fired the old beast up and she ran fine (although still cuts out in the midrange) i also tried running the engine with the choke on and it worked, i.e it reved all through the rev range no problems at all (although on tickover the engines obviously running really fast!!!) so what im asking is:

A. Would a new diaphragm solve my problem
B. Where do i get one as i cant source one anywhere
C. Is it actually a choke problem

Hope ive been clear, and any help would be appreciated!

which carb issit?
you shud be able to find a rebuild kit or just the diaphragm on fleabay or local mota factors now you,ve got numbers to quote
weber 32/34 DMTL 3/101 upto 1985

weber 32/34 DTML 7/101 1985 onwards

cheers for that had a word with my mechanic today and he said it was definately the diaphragm causing the problems, will get that part and get back offroad! thanks again.

quick update, replaced the diaphragms on the carb, cleaned it all the jets and where the floats are in the carb as there was a lot of gunk hanging around, put it all back together and it ran fine, then it started cutting out in the mid range again (although not as bad this time) but i also noticed that the petrol was gettin low, not so low the light came on but near enough) so could this be the simple solution, i need more fuel!!?? stay tuned to find out....

I agree that a fooked diaphragm will cause the problem.

Being an older vehicle don't forget the lower the fuel level the more ****e you are gonna drag through the fuel filter too. I would fe-fill with fuel and then fit a new fuel filter too.

yeah will do ratty, took it for a spin today and its been absolutely fine! is there anyway to drain and clean the tank out without dropping it out the chassis? there must be some kind of a plug surely!? if not il just never let it get down to a quarter of a tank!

Most older landys have a drain bolt in the bottom of the tank. Thye can be prone to rustin solid so be careful if you try to undo it.
