make sure you get a 10p engine ECU as a 15p one will not work (10p up to 2001, 15p 2002 onwards.

first of there are 2 things that trigger mil lamp
1 throttle pedal
2 crankshaft position sensor
ecu is varnished and rarely die
if the injector harness is breaking down you would have missfire
tps goes to bcu then ecu via fusebox underbonnet
new ecu will plug in and go but best to programe injector codes into new ecu

Sounds like a throttle pedal problem as "limp" mode still allows some acceleration as does a stuck wastegate as would a dodgy injector loom.
Does it fire up OK and idle? If so the ECU is OK and just not getting throttle signal.
Ask them if they can see changing thottle signal on diagnostics. My Nanocom shows that so a pucker LR set up defo should.
Knackered crank position sensor will stop engine from running completely.

I'd not be too quick to buy a new ECU until the basics have been checked.

hi yes it fires up first turn key every time and idles fine, just nothing at acc pedal they said they checked throttle pedal sensor that's ok ill ask them about throttle signal. thanks

If it idles then there is nothing wrong with the injector harness as it would misfire and hunt all over the place otherwise. Also the crank position sensor must be OK for it to idle.
My guess is the throttle pedal wiring needs looking at if they say the throttle pedal potentiometer is OK.
If I unplug my throttle pedal my MIL (engine management) lamp lights up and obviously the engine just idles away happily.

Mine had a seized wastegate when I bought it. It might show overboost on diagnostics but you won't get a MIL from that (mine never did anyway).

thanks guys ill ring them in morning tell them check out throttle pedal wiring, the breakdown guy fixed the seized wastegate at least I no,no mill light off that ty.

Tidds I would suggest you carefully consider your choice of garage. Not prepared to go into detail on an open forum, but will say I refuse to take mine there.?! There's quite few smaller garages around up here that are very good. If you insist on using a 4x4 specialist I would recommend Cheviot 4x4. Personally I find them expensive but good at their job.

Where you based.?!

i'm down the north east a fair bit, i'd be interested to know of good landy garages.

anywhere from shields to newcastle.. even sunderland  would be good :)

hi I was on my way to cheviot 4x4 when I broke down to pick up some parts (door hinges new locks) I rang them told them id broken down on coast road he said cant help you no mechanics here, I rang round few garages see if they had diagnostic machine for defender 90 all said no landrover team valley don't seem too bothered whats wrong with my baby lol im going to get it tomm fixed or still broke any suggestions for good garages near Gateshead would be a great help thanks guys.

There is a place in Washington, just past Makro on the same trading estate:

Spanner Monkeys

Marsha and Peter will be more than bothered about your Landy - Marsha even named mine for me when it went in for a bit of lecky work :)

Other than that, there is North East and Rover Services down in Sacriston. Never used them myself, but heard nothing but great reports from them, no website, but here is their numbers:

Mal : 07791725860
Trev : 07546123745

Hope you get the go go pedal sorted soon!

Ben

Edit: I have no affiliation with either of these companies.

If the repair shop cant find the fault, your Defender is in the wrong repair shop. Look up Durham 4x4 in Bowburn and speak with Graham, get your motor in to them; they will find and fix the problem for you; they are very reasonable and know their stuff.
I have been using their services for the past 4 years and would not go anywhere else...........
