We own a two-seater Defender 90 which we use for many purposes as most of us does. It’s our daily drive, our weekend thrill at the off-road events yet most important it is our travel companion. During our summer holidays we usually travel (camp) some 5.000+ km during three to four weeks. The car is not that heavy loaded; ‘light’ roof rack, roof tent, awning, camping gear, water, gaz etc. I believe we have added some 300 kg to the car.

We have FamousFour heavy duty springs (standard length) and Bilstein heavy duty shock absorbers. We have also fitted polybushes (orange FloFlex). The anti-roll bars have been dismantled but the body roll is very limited as the suspension is pretty stiff.

In general the suspension feels too hard/stiff. Every little bump feels like a giant rock and driving rough gravel roads is no fun at all. When driving off-road (like the Pomerania event in Poland) I also have trouble to keep a good pace on dirt roads as the ride is too tough.

So – how can I soften up our ride even when considering the car being well loaded on the long trips? Softer springs? Softer absorbers? Two absorbers in the rear?, softer bushings?
We need a smoother ride.

And what if we were to go on a longer trip adding another 200 kg to the car?

Rgds Lars!
