Hello guys,

I'm brand new here and in the process of buying a 94 Defender 90 300tdi which is lovely however it's falls fail of the LEZ in London being a light 4x4 utility vehicle.

However it has forward facing rear seats and seatbelts fitted which have been MOT'ed but no side windows...

Does anyone know if those seats would make it effectively a Station Waggon and LEZ compliant?

I could fit some small token rear windows with some Perspex if necessary.

Any one else has this issues or know if that's a suitable solution?? This is a nightmare as I've basically fallen in love with this bloody car!

Many thanks guys.

I just checked mine and they ask a series of questions and seats are not in that list...
(I did pick 4x4 and not car)
My result was:
You said your vehicle:
  • runs on diesel
  • weighs between 1.205 GVW and 3.5 tonnes GVW
  • was registered as new before 1 January 2002
  • has had no modification
TfL classifies your vehicle as a larger van or other specialist diesel vehicle for LEZ purposes.

Welcome and good luck.

Has been discussed before, have a look at the LEZ website, as you will have to apply for it. Not heard of anyone doing it if it was not registered from new as a Station wagon.

Cheers

Yea I read something on the LEZ website about it having to have side windows and fitted seats/seatbelts (not benches).

I rang them and explained and the guy was vague but thought that it being modified as such would be ok, just need to send proof but wondered if anyone had done this successfully.

It's amazing what adding windows and seats can do to your cars emissions...

you will fall foul of insurance companies. As modifying seat and windows were not the norm. You will need to do pro and con. CSW and SW are different as the seating and windows fixtures

Thanks for the replies, a bit of research seems to suggest theres no hope!

Apparently it all goes on what the car was originally intended as, regardless of any conversions etc. Tempted to get a station wagon and convert it to a van just to mug them off but sadly I'm not a millionaire!

Gutted!

I had a few years of arguing with both the DVLC and my insurance companies that I had a "Land Rover 110 Hard Top", and not a 'van' until they agreed!
This brought her down from an 'MoT Class 7' to an 'MoT Class 4'.
Don't know if that would make any difference withTfL though, but you could try!

Sadly, the OP lives in London :(
I know, so do most of the others which post about the problem but that doesn't stop that advice being the best advice!
The other option is to accept that you cannot drive your land rover (without paying a kings ransom) until it is over the 40 years of age needed to exempt. Out of those two choices avoiding London and enjoying your land rover has to be the better option.

Absolutely, since getting a fine, I do both!!

As with all of these similar threads the best option seems to be just avoid London like the plague! A sentiment I wholeheartedly agree with.

Yes, I think the only times I go into London these days is taking my daughter to the museums or something, and even that is turning miserably busy
Otherwise I do avoid at all costs

After a bit of research it seems that only original station wagons pre 2002 are exempt as classed as estates. Modification, regardless of how well done, means nothing.

Anything post 2002 which meets euro 3 emissions is ok.

You can check on the TFL website here... https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/lez-lez-vehicle-checker-35896

It's ridiculous that two cars with identical engines/emissions is decided by the original intended use regardless of the fact Defender, especially older ones, are often modified to meet the requirements. TFLs licence to print money. Sadly i don't have the option to move out just yet!
