i have 2 choices looking for feedback.
looking for a discovery for collecting stock for my business, for family use and off roading, got a set amount of. cash do i :-

a. spend money getting a 300tdi 5 door 7 seat refurbished, rebuilt and spec to what i need, like raised suspension, winch bumper, extended wheel arches, wider tyres, roll cage, spots, roof lights, underside protection stuff etc.

b. buy a 2004 td5 5 door 7 seat with not much left to do extras to the vehicle as above.

Hi D95, as you are being a bit coy and not stating your budget it's a bit difficult to make usefull observations but here is my first:

1. You can buy tricked-up TDi300's all day long for about £2-2500

2. A year 2004 TD5 7 seater, according to Ebay 5 mins ago is going to cost about £6000 to £8000

So as you can see, the budget aspect does need spelling out if you want some common-sense replies.

A pal of mine has just bought a 1999 TD5 manual 5 seater GS with all the trimmings - 2" lift, winch bumper and winch, various bits of protection and good off-road rubber for £4500.

How much do you want to spend?

Cheers
Dave

been quoted 10k for 300tdi from a company who totally rebuild and spec up but i told 5 yrs time will spend big time due to rust hence 2004 td5 better value but not so much off road spec.
do intend to keep disco for ever if poss

If, as your first posts says, you really need all the extra off-road kit, then surely you've answered your own question?

10k for a disco1??! You need yer head checking!!!! (imho anyways :D)

I've got one '98 Tdi 300 manual - lovely condition, 2" lift wheel and tyre setup, loads of underbody protection and fully waxoyled.

You could have that for £9800 and will guarantee the car against rust for 10yrs.

Which of those extras do you actually need for your off road use? They sound more of a wish list.
I would prefer to add the extras my self as needed and have all the fun in doing it. Paying for someone else to do it is always expensive.

If the money's there, does it matter?

Personally that's what I'm doing as that way I know I ain't getting ripped off & I'm getting the satisfaction of doing it myself .... But we know little about the situation/time/ability to pass judgement on the OP's request...

The caveat was "set amount of cash". Thebiglad asked what was the budget. Still waiting for a reply from the original poster.

Aye noticed that bit:doh:, & I was but passing on my OPINION! but surely if the OP can afford to run a Subaru then a LR (whether it's a 300TDi or a TD5) is pocket money in comparism, and mod's would be affordable given the higher mpg & lower tax/insurance that would offer instant saving's.

The OP's biggest problem will no doubt be the different driving style's between a Disco & a Subaru, they are chalk & cheese after all. But, yes more info from OP would be good...

ill try better this time.
took my 300tdi to a company who would strip rebuild it and put extras on it ie. suspension lift, snorkle, wading kit, winch bumper, bfg at,s. full respray, egr removed, decat, roof lights, rack, door ladder spots, interior engine rebuilt, clutch, brakes, discs,ns chrome ball n seals, front boddy riggers, rear wheel arches, bump stops, front bearings, leaking turbo pipe, sunrrofs ficked, leak not open, alot of welding like boot, a posts weld, power steering leak, stearing damper and some more stuff. 12k for mine to get like new. they rather supply one that would need less and do for 10k. i not reliase this would be so much.
i like the disco 1 have 300tdi 1995 es for 2 year, help from this site good at keeping her going, but she needs alot now.
as from all i read and hear the td5 gives alot of electrical probs.
advised td5 better investment if i going to spend this sort of money, better value.
300tdi easier to work with on basic stuff as i not that good on major repairs stuff or welding.
but if i spend on this others tell me will be rust big style again a few years and will spend more money.
also need something done by oct 2010 as mot out on mine. and need to keep mobile for various reasons.
then others advise would get 300tdi 7 seat 1998 for 2 to 3 k but i keep looking and not finding a good one.
1998 disco 300tdi up road was cat d guy wont budge on 4k most i went was 3k still wants 4k

my budget, well after the above result my the only option was looking at 5 yr loan.
but i aint rushing on this thats why i looking for advice from you guys

That 98 Disco is way over the odds price wise, personally I reckon the TD5's are lovely motor's BUT they are more expensive and harder/dearer to repair. Personally I'd go for a decent 300TDi with a decent lack of rust ... upon finding it, I'd make it a priority to treat the chassis and under part's with a decent rust proofing & any welding required. The engine's if serviced regularly are good for 300k or more.
