Hi all was wanting to decat disco 300tdi 1996 by putting on 300tdi non cat exhaust system i know about mot grey area but what is the legal position what penalty could you expect and does anyone know some body who has been caught
cheers

there is no "grey" area as far as removing a cat from a diesel vehicle as they are not part of the test, as long as your smoke emissions are ok (which TDi engines are with or without a cat) you will have no problem. There is nothing to be caught for, my 300TDi left the factory without a cat fitted, along with egr valve they are the biggest waster of fuel and power there is. typical merkins insisting that they are fitted for there emission levels then don't take diesels only gas guzzlers.

JUST HAD MY TD5 MOTd WITHOUT THE CAT AND NO PROBLEMS, APPARENTLY THEIR MORE OF A FILTER THAN A CAT ACCORDING TO A MECHANIC FREIND.

Legally if you remove them you commit an offence as you are modifying the exhaust from standard, that said the likelyhood of anything happening about it is miniscule, unless you really p%$s off a copper who knows his stuff and thats if you can find one outside:D

My 300tdi never had a cat fitted when built. Not sure why some did and others didn't, whether it's an after a certain date thing or not. Still if some left the factory without it's pretty unlikely that anyone, let alone a copper would know if one was originally fitted or not, and LR still supply exhausts for non-cat tdi's.

As Stig said they are not an MoT item for a diesel anyway so whats the point having the thing, just sucks power from the engine.
