Hi folks my car just died
A friend of mine took the prop of as the viscous coupling was going but now apparently the ird has gone and the car has no drive at all any ideas or tips......?
 
The power input from the gearbox to the IRD has a spline for the front wheel drive and a different spline for the rear wheel drive. As said above, it's probably a case the front spline has worn leaving power to the rear wheels only. Hence why you have no drive after taking the prop off. To confirm you could get someone to drive forward in 1st gear while you look under yer Freelander. The pinion gear (what the prop was connected to) on the rear of the IRD will spin and the Freelander won't move. Be canful not to get run over.

Actually, the inner spline is the output shaft for the L/H front wheel, it connects to the front diff inside the IRD.

If there was still drive to the rear when VCU was removed, then something is broken or stripped in the diff inside the IRD

What do you think is wrong with the ird then? Freelander stopped after the vcu was removed which would suggest he only had rear wheel drive. Lifting front wheels and turning them would prove the path through the ird. Also lifting 1 front wheel shold see the pinion turn?

the IRD is fine the Gearbox is at fault i saw a pic once of the spines for the drive

best thing to do is to cut cost is to get a gearbox first while its out check and replace clutch then refit IRD and run in 2wd mode for a bit then once funds there or if you have get on the phone to bell for a VCU or if your close enough get them to fit it aswell

There is a short splined link through the gearbox final drive housing, this joins the ird diff to the front left wheel. This splined link is a known failure point

If there is still drive to the rear wheels then the major components of the IRD are still in place, but there is either a stripped spline or broken output shaft, or a stripped or broken diff gear, the diff housing is still intact as the input shaft would otherwise move out of it's bearing cup and all hell would break loose. My guess would be L/H output shaft

Either way, the call to Bells or Ashcrofts is the best alternative to calling the breakers. The rear diff probably needs checking as well.

got a diff clank when taking up drive, but its a td4 getrag box.
first thoughts were the ird, but the gearchange is a bit notchy so i'm not totally sure...
running in fwd only at the moment and it still happens, changed ird & main box oils, no swarf or anything in the drained oil.

might replace the ird to eliminate that part of the drive train, but then, whilst most of it is off, is it worth doing the gearbox (and clutch i suppose) at the same time :confused:
rather not spend money on clutch/replacement gearbox if its not needed but I hate doing jobs twice.:mad:
