So after the accident as described on a previous post I've had some to think about.
It would seem that in todays society no one takes ownership of their own mistakes. No one will stand up and be counted.

I've had a few accidents in my 20 years of driving but have always owned up to any that have been my fault. So, I don't think it's too much to ask of other people. But no, the guy who turned across my path knows it was his fault. He also knows I know it was his fault. yet he still tells his insurance company that he was in the central reservation waiting to turn right and I hit him!! so I am glad that the person behind me stopped to give me her details as a witness.

That got me thinking - What if she didn't - like so many do, because they don't want to get involved or havn't got the time. Well it would seem the answer is a dash cam which I am really thinking about investing in.

Now I know these are the really cheap ones. has any one else got a dash cam. Can you share some stories about them? Do they work in law? any input would be good?

It starts recording automatically when you turn on the ignition, shoots HD footage which is clear enough to make out number plates of other cars, audio can be disabled (so as not to accidentally incriminate yourself of anything!) and like a CCTV camera it just loops over your old footage when your memory card runs out of space.

Just wish, like you, that I had it when I had the crash last year.. Still yet to need it in anger but I'm sure I will one day!
 
If you're that worried, for less than £20 either will probably be good ... I'd personally go for a HD one if I could afford it, I use a standard compact camera (Fujitsu J37 I think) on a dash mount for green-laning but it'd be no good for what you want as it stops when it runs out of space and battery power .. though it does last most of a day .. ;)
 
One of those things I've thought about getting for ages but never got round to it. Well worth having I reckon, if there's no witness and just your word against theirs they can't argue with a camera.

It seems to work well - and with a 32Gig SD card records tons - several days laning, etc.
The only criticisms I have, and thats most likely down to its cost, is that you tend to get a lot of flare at night. reflections from number plates make them difficult to read.

The only other criticism, if it actually is one, is that the professional cameras have GPS build in, so not only does it date and time log an accident, but where it is as well.

For £17 tho, it does the job well. You can also take stills from the video if you wish.

However as MHM says, not the best build quality but for £17 its not too bad. OK for laning but you do have to have it set to the highest resolution to get the best results. With a 32gig card you get hours of videa and thousands of photo's...
 
Two other things, not actually related, but you can set it to take photos, rather that video if you wish.
You can also set to be PIR switched, so you could use it to video wildlife or as a security camera..... but as it tends to be easily visible, it would most likely get pinched :(.
 
something worth checking before hand is if your ins company would take the video as evidence, mine said unless it was one that had gps so can record speed, direction times etc that they wouldn't be able to use it.
 
Insurance company might not be able to accept it without GPS, but what about the police? If they show up at a collision and the other guy says its all your fault, but you show them the video clearly showing it to be his fault, would their crash report back you up to your insurers?
 
I got two, one for the front, one for the rear, they ARE hd, *(ok, 720 rather than 1024) and in daylight, they are really good, in the dark, not so good, but still not bad, the IR LEDs are pretty useless, they dont penetrate far enough to be of much use tbh.
