Dammed kids, do you think Landy is OK for this

I used to do 000's of miles, all over the country taking my daughter showing.

Since our show cob got older and her new horse, aptly nicknamed "The Beast" was too balmy and stressy, we have only been competing locally.

Therefore when I replaced the Disco last year it was with something which would do the job and I could have as my toy :D A 20 year old Defender which only has 75,000 miles on the clock and is being looked after ( I am even learning to so the servicing myself)

Today she dropped the bombshell that she thinks "The Beast" is ready to start competing properly.

Now I have a few months to work out how to accomplish this. The trailer is nearly new so thats not a problem. But will the Landy stand up to this kind of mileage. Do I even want to try. I have the best breakdown cover plus NFU cover to recover the horses and trailer if necessary but I dont want to need it.

In the old days Yorkshire to Keysoe (Bedfordshire I think) was the furthest we did regularly.

Any thoughts, do I have to part with my Landy, I really really dont want to. I already have two cars so I cant afford a third.

How reliable has it been so far???
How many miles do you do currently? enough to justify saying its reliable?
Does it have a good service history?

Engine wise at 75k genuine miles I would be very surprised if you have any major component failures but there's always consumables that could start wearing quickly/all at once!

If you decide to keep it then it may be worth going through all the consumables and checking/replacing as nessecary if your not confident in its reliability...
 
the fender will get there eventually... whether you can stick the seats and the general driving experience on longer runs is a question only you can answer.... youve had a disco so know how much more civilised they are on a trip.

reliability wise there aint a lot of difference tween a fender and a disco of similar age and condition

personally id flog the rattle box and look for a disco.

Does it have a good service history? Have a service history but its not complete, she had a new timing belt when I bought her and a service

No couldn't cope with that again. Hate to say it but if the Defender goes it would have to be a Japanese :eek::eek:

Sell it and get a hilux! More comfortable and more reliable. Sell the LR onto someone who will put it to better use, it's not built for comfortable motorway miles.
 
I've just driven the 110 from Glos to Teeside 259miles left at 11am stopped for brekkie at half past then drove to Donacaster to drop some bits off. for PaulD & Bump. had a coffee at Pauls then drove up A1 to Thirsk where I stopped for food. then onto Mintys took me about 10hrs all in inc food stops and getting lost in Rush hr traffic in Donny. probably 7hrs of driving. I felt fine when I got out at the end. Don't know WTF peeps slag em off for. comfy as fook
 
If its a tdi defender then its quite capable of dealing with what you want , as from what Ive seen of horse transport a citroen 2cv could achieve the required velocity :)

ps towed a trailer 1587miles in 39 hours in australia in my 110 perfectly comfortable but admit was a bit tired at the end :eek:

But I was going to put it to good use. I have been invited on a Green Laning trip between Christmas and New Year, I had also plans for the summer including buying some bling like off road tyres and snorkle :(

How old is your Landy? I agree that they are not uncomfortable. My back is terrible after a few hours in the Focus but fine in the Defender. Must say I sometimes get cramp in my clutch foot when I drive in the rush hour.

Are you saying we horsey people drive slow :D Its true, nothing like horses falling over on corners to destabilize the vehicle.

This is it, its a 1991 J Reg, not sure about the tdi bit.

I have a 110 as well and it is adequate for long miles. I also have a hilux and I would always choose it over the Defender for towing on a long journey as it is more comfortable. I also have an X5 and I'd choose that over both for long miles without towing. My point was whilst it is capable it's no where near the best for the job he is describing. Out of the three 4x4's I have the Defender is my favourite but I know what it is good for what it is great for and what it is adequate for and towing on motorways it is adequate at best.

5ft 9" & a bit.. perfect size for a fender.. still got OE seats in it as well. They sit a bit Upright for me. would prefer that they recline a tad more. But no great problem.

Tyres are ****e though 265/75/16 BFG Muds. love em offroad fooking ****e on wet tarmac.. :eek: like steeroing a canoe they aquaplane that much..

never had any problems on the 90 and ran Khumo road venturers and Insa Sahara's

mines 97 Preg 300tdi yours should be a 200tdi. so just as capable

Secret in rush hr is to leave BIG gaps and roll in a low gear to avoid having to use clutch all the time.

I have noticed that my 300 tdi 90 isn't fast n just does 60 on the motorway, I did notice that with a car trailer and car in it dint slowdown much,

You could maybe tweak the fuel pump and a Bigger Intercooler would tow better.

Just realised, did I try sell you some wheels at the blue barn in otley when you had just bought it.

Fook me I can get 80 (on the clock) outta mine.. frightens the ****e out of me though.. so tend to stick to 60/65

Thanks, mine isn't really slow, easily went to 70 on the motorway and as you say trailer doesn't make much difference.

The speed isn't really an issue, stick to 50 with the big trailer anyway. I am just worried about reliability. Dont want to be recovered with the horses, its frightening on the motorway ( I know this because the Disco did it a couple of times)
 
yer fender is basically mechanically the same as an early disco...if youre confident with the one youve got and happy with the comfort aspect its probably best to stick with what youve got.... change it if and when you find problems with it, and you never know the kid might change her mind again in a few months.

stuff that wears out.
belts, tensioners, brake pads, bushes, brushes, universal joints, flexi pipes, clutch, bearings, fluids (engine oil, gear oils for main box, transfer box, axles, swivels, fluid for power steering, water for radiator coolant, windscreen washers, dot 3 or 4 for brake & clutch) bulbs, switches, tyres,
pretty much anything that moves, tho some are more relevant than others.

an i know pretty much nak all about jap stuff.
