daft engine question alert

i have a 89 landrover 90. while i was checking my oil n water today i noticed something i think is odd :confused:. theres a black cap ontop of the engine (very knowldegeable aren't i lol), anyway its loose. it pushes back on but the hose onto it makes it pop up again.


right now you've all stopped laughing at my incredible lack of knowledge - should this be happening and does it need sorting?

In a 1989 90 you'll either have the 2.5 N/A or 2.5TD (Turbo Diesel) engine. The black cap that you are referring to is the oil filler cap, and the pipe which is stopping it from sitting properly is the breather pipe. The best thing to do is remove the cap, replace the rubber seal around the bottom of the bung and then clean up the inside of the rocker cover where you insert it. Basically, the breather pipe, which will no doubt be a very hard and stiff piece of pipe will be lifting the cap out of the rocker cover because the seal has worn and there's no friction keeping it in place.

It's not a major problem and could in fact be beneficial to your engine (breathing wise), but you're better off having it well stuck in to avoid water and bits of crap finding their way into your engine!

They're pretty simple engines to work on to be honest. I have a 2.5 N/A which you could possibly have in yours and I didn't really know a thing about engines before I bought it a year ago. I joined up here, started asking questions and now I've stripped the engine down and rebuilt it, fitted a new fuel tank, changed my timing belt along with tons of other little bits and bobs to the extent that I can now probably do for myself what most mechanics will charge upwards of £40 an hour to do for me.

There's a ton of great videos on youtube from a guy called "The Vintage Tractor Engineer" which have been of much help to me:

I think we have enough pictures and walk through's on here ourselves but they aren't really consolidated into one area!

ta for that - will have a good shufti. Beryl (the blue landy) has a 2.5TD in her - only done 85k. just need to sort a few little things and she'll be fab....not that she isn't fab already but you get the idea :D
