Having removed the tatty remnants of the original soundproof/insulation blanket from my defenders bonnet I went looking for a replacement.
You can get copies of the black mat (part # AWR4147) from Britpart (£80 ish) but I wanted something a bit betterer and looked at various ebay offerings.
Dynamat produce a kit (# DA8091) for about £50 but it seems a bit sparse.

I'm currently sound proofing around the cab etc and have settled on DoDo mat as thier other stuff is excellent.
I did buy some 'CarInsulation' matting for the cab roof which is an 'Aero chocolate bar' (eBay # 252376922277) constructed foam with a sticky back and tin-foil cover. It sticks quite well but was a bit squishy (technical term) and the cotton reinfocement was spaced at around 10mm.
It ticked all the other boxes though ..
  • Reduces engine noise & heat through bonnet
  • Conforms easily to particular bonnet applications
  • Self Adhesive for easy installation
  • Withstands temperatures of excess of 100°C (110°C max)
  • Helps protect bonnet paint from harsh engine temperatures
  • High noise reduction & thermal insulation properties
  • Ideal for vehicle bonnet / firewall / engine compartment
  • Non-flammable, flame retardant FMVSS302
  • Bonnet Liner Kit – 7mm Reinforced Aluminum and closed cell foam Sheet

I measured the bonnet and noted that the CarInsulation mat comes in a 1 x 0.5M pad .... that's too small.
DoDo mat comes in a 1M x 1M sheet and @ £19 is cheaper too <Dodo Bonnet Liner – Sound Deadening Shop>

I bought one of each ...

The DoDo mat is far superior.
Stickyer
More dense (but not stiff)
Thicker alluminium skin and more reinforcing fiber strands.

Problem was @ 1M x 1M it's too small. The defender bonnet needs 1.3M to go from edge to edge at the bulkhead end although 1M from this back edge to the front was perfect.

With the bonnet cleaned up and the DoDo thermal insulation mat at hand I got omn with other things until the weather turned bad (why do I do that ?)

Anyway, I brought the bonnet in the house and got it nicely warmed up.
I squibed a bit of sealant under the gaps between the skin and the ribs and introduced the cat to a tin of brake cleaner.

After a good wipe down I put some sound deadenimng mat between the ribs.

I cut a length of DoDo Bonnet Liner to 1.5M and laid it over the bonnet. As you can see @ 1M width it's perfect.

Placing it centrally I marked the edge, cut the triangle off and after fitting it right up to the edge of the bonnet, I marked and cut out so it fitted tight against the center rib.
The section in the picture below isn't stuck down, just sitting in the space.

I did exactly the same to the other side so now I have have 3 pieces, 2 in the bonnet and 1 oversized bit for the center.

The cat and I contemplated the job and with his approval we decided to stick them all down

After both sides and the center wells were stuck down I was left with an oversized center bit which hangs over both ribs by approx 40mm.

I used some alluminium tape to seal all round the edges and over the oval holes in the ribs, cleaned the area with brake cleaner and stuck the center section on from the bottom to the top pressing the edges down and making sure there were no bubbles.

If anyone is interested I can send you a 'Defender bonnet lining kit' comprising.

PM me for a price if you are interested.

<snip> I'd been contemplating a Dynamat under-bonnet kit for when my 90 is ready but this looks so much better.

I looked at those too - this one right ? https://www.johncraddockltd.co.uk/da8091-dynamat-sound-deadening-90110-bonnet-1983-1998.html it seems expensive too for what it is.
It'll be quite heavy too @ 3Kg sq/M. The DoDo solution is less than 1Kg all in.
I did buy the CarInsulation offering from eBay (# 252376922277) but it's not the same quality as the DoDo mat. I've stuck this on the cab roof and around the bulkhead.

Just about to start selling these bonnet liner 'kits' on eBay.
Thought i'd post here first

The Defender Bonnet kit will comprise:

1 off 150cm x 100cm x 7mm thick Dodo Bonnet liner <Dodo Bonnet Liner – Sound Deadening Shop>
2 off DoDo mat, silver, DEADN hex sheet <Dodo Mat DEADN Hex Sheet – Sound Deadening Shop>
1 off 12' foot roll of Aluminium Finishing Tape <Aluminium Finishing Tape – Sound Deadening Shop>

All DoDo (The Sound Deadening Shop) products, designed to fit as per this thread (ie. instructions above).

I accept PayPal, bank transfer or cash on collection and can provide a VAT receipt (if requested).
Price includes UK delivery (MyHermes).

Note this is a specific kit to fit the Land Rover Defender 200, 300 and TD5 'old shape' bonnet, as fitted to the Defender 90, 110 or 130 models.
By 'specific' I mean that it's wide enough to go from edge to edge of the bonnet which the kit sold by The Sound Deadening Shop doesn't (it's not wide enough).
The kit includes the two sound deadening pads required to go between the center strengthening ribs, which takes the 'twang' out of the bonnet and also provides a smaller step for the bonnet liner to flow over.
The kit is made up of products from the Sound Deadening Shop (Dodo Mat)

If you are a member of this group please PM me for a price. If you are reading this and are not a member, join the group, introduce yourself and then PM me.
Or buy the kit on eBay.
eBay price will be £38.99 + £4.50 shipping

Just my opinion but I'm not a lover of stick down sound insulation, especially in a leaky landy. I just envisage moisture trapped under it ant rusting away the panel unseen. As far as the bonnet insulation is concerned, when I took mine off, there was no noticeable difference in the cab.

Your bonnet leaks ? You need to get that fixed Mr Cholmondley-Warner.

It will take the 'dwang' out the bonnet and does improve the sound (dampen the engine noise) outside the car, I didn't envisage a drop of noise in the cab specifically although it does make a bit of difference. My bulkhead is insulated inside and out and I can tell the difference with the bonnet open or closed. When it's closed the main source of noise comes from the exhaust which moves forwards when the bonnet is open. My girlfriend said the car sounds quieter (actually she said "less rattly"), when I get back from shooting @ 2am now the bonnet is insulated. Which for me wins ....
