My TD5 Disco has just done 130k miles and I'm thinking of having an auto gearbox oil and filter change.

My mates really doing it and I'm just assisting, but I'm getting the parts and oil together for the end of the month.
I've done searches and some are really confusing about what oil to use.
So could someone just reccommend a good oil and what quantity.

Thankyou,
Paul

By the book:

Automatic Gearbox
Use ATF Dexron IID or Dexron III oil for refill or topping-up.

Automatic gearbox fill from dry >> 9.7 litres

Thanks mate.
Comma do Dexron 3 and I get 10% discount at my local parts shop. Possible bargain.

To do an autobox oilchange you either pump it out via the oil cooler connections, or you do it via the sump and level/plug.

If you do the former you need to have specialist equipment but you will get a full oilchange at one go. If you do the latter it is a 2 stage approach and you will only change about 75% of the oil.

I will be talking about using the second method.

1. You will need an allen key of suitable size to open the sump plug, a new sump plug washer, a Torx bit size T5 (from memory) to open the fill/level plug, a large oil collecting bowl, a 500mml syringe or something similar (for putting the new oil in), a reliable assistant and 5ltrs of Dexron III;

2. Get the oil warmed up by going for a drive then park on level ground;

3. Place the collecting bowl under the autobox sump area and crack off the level plug, then open the sump plug and allow to empty. Take out the level plug. Leave to drain for 20 mins - enough time for a cuppa !!

4. Once the draining has finished, using the new washer close up the sump plug and commence refilling the box via the level plug. At this stage you will only be able to get perhaps 2ltrs of oil in the box.

5. Now get your assistant in the vehicle and tell them to select N, place the transfer box lever in neutral, place the main box lever in P and start the engine;

6. Whilst your assistant is dealing with point no.5, you will be able to put in more oil;

7. Now ask the assistant to cycle through each gear position halting each tim for 2-3secs to allow the box to take up drive before moving on. Once they have done P,R,N,D,3,2,1 and then back to P leaving the engine running, you should be able to put in the balance of about 4.5ltrs of oil, an amount similar to that that you took out.

8. Once you have put in this much oil you top up until you get a bead of oil coming back out of the filler hole. The box is now refilled so close the fill hole with it's plug and you're done, for now.

9. In about 200mls, do the whole procedure again. This means the new oil has mixed with the old oil left in from last time so you will be be removing old and new, but that's tough if you do it this way.

Good luck

Dave

If your going to drop the oil again in a few hundred miles, I would recommend replacing the filter on the second drop as ATF contains a good amount of detergent and the filter will collect some more "crud" with the new oil added.

What's the best thing to do?
First do a change of oil only, and the second time (couple of 100 km later) do the filter change?
Or change the filter with the first oil change?

Thanks, Koen
