Dear All, I'm hoping you can help me with useful suggestions re a transmission problem I've just encountered on my 2002 Disco 2 V8 auto :(:

I was driving my 2002 D2 V8 Auto on the highway at about 100 kmph, in the middle lane; suddenly and with no warning I felt a slight judder from the transmission; the rev counter needle was occillating a few hundred rpm up and down. I had drive, but drive seemed intermittent or reduced.

Almost immediately, the green transmission warning light started to flash, along with the green cog-shaped 'M' and 'S' lights, the 'D' icon in the lcd panel, the 'three amigos'; the little red dot on the gear selector also blinking on and off. :eek:

Alarmed, I pulled over, turned off the ignition key, waited 30 seconds, then restarted. The transmission worked perfectly, and gave me no problem at all for the rest of the 15 km or so to home.

The vehicle has done about 100,000 miles, but is well and regularly maintained. I've had it for the past three years/50,000 miles, and have never encountered this problem before.

The only outstanding maintenance issues are shot shocks, and faulty ABS sensors, which cause the 'amigos' problem. I intend to get both of these done in the near future.

My pet theories are: a sensor fault; a selector mechanism fault; needs new ATF fluid, and oils in the rest of the transmission. I do hope this isn't a major transmission issue. :( If it is serious/expensive, I'd rather take pre-emptive action and get stuff fixed before worse damage gets done.

Would the suspension/ABS issues mentioned above affect the transmission? Any help from LandyZone readers most gratefully received, as garages out here can often be incompetent and/or dishonest, and it makes sense to turn up informed. I'll be using my 1984 RRC until I get this problem sorted :)

Hi Mike and welcome. It sounds to me like you have several faults that all occured at the same time:

1. Some kind of engine fault triggered the jerkiness:

2. The autobox lights coming on can be caused by: a. a faulty XYZ switch; b. a poorly battery;

3. The 3 amigos have loads of causes but it sounds like you know you need to change at least one wheel sensor.

If it was my car I would be checking the condition of and/or looking at changing the car battery (assuming it's not recent), getting the engine on some kind of electronic diagnosis machine and replacing those wheel sensors.
