Hi guys

just been out in the disco today and whilst parked up in a side street with the engine running i could smell an antifreezy smell, so i opened the bonnet and there was coolant on the near side of the engine around the top hose area and there was also a hissing sound aswell, anyway when i got home i opened the bonnet and with a rag i wiped everything down and when i wiped over the bleed screw on the top hose the hissing noise changed but there is bubbles coming from it now, can i but a bleed screw on its own or do i need to buy a top hose.

I'd be inclined to make absolutely sure it was just a leaking bleed screw. Hard to say without seeing it but are you sure you've not got a blowing head gasket?????
You may not have mayonaise in yer oil or even oil in yer coolant but it could be over pressurizing. Admitedly tha's a bit pessimistic but IMHO tha could be yer prob. ;)

thanks for all your replies i only asked as i only replaced the antifreeze last week as i replaced both heater hoses as one was leaking, after doing this i bleed the system and the bleed screw has only started leaking since then.

Now you tell US

a, either you've under or over tightened yer bleed screw. or
b, you've still got an air lock in it would be my guess ;) :D

thanks for that Bromsgrove defender, with the car being stood since yesterday lunch time would i be ok to remove the cap from the header tank remove the bleed screw put some thread tape round it and refit it without bleeding the system or do i still need to bleed the system.

Er although not to be recommended you can remove the cap from the expansion tank within a few minutes of stopping provided you take adequate precautions to prevent scalding. I normally wait however until the top hose is cool enough to hold.
As for yer bleedin screw, before wraping thread tape round it. Why does it fecking leak.
Did you over tighten it?
If the answer is, "I don't know" then undo it a bit until coolant flows out or it blows bubbles.
If coolant flows out then put something underneath to catch it. Remove the bleed screw completely and look very carefully at the thread on it as well as the top hose. Cause you may have stripped it by over tightening or cross threaded it. Or both.
If it blows bubbles, then you still have air in the system and you'll need to bleed it out. you may find squeezing the top hose will help. Check and refill if necessary yer expansion tank, on no account let it empty. When no more bubbles come out do the bleed screw up till it is firm and not as tight as you can get it.
(I thought all top hoses n bleed screws had white dots on em so normal procedure is to count the turns to remove it then do it up same number of turns and match up the dots simples.)
Check and refill if necessary yer expansion tank.
Take it for a short spin, leave it to stand for a bit check for leaks, slacken off the bleed screw again to see if bubbles are still coming out.
Hope fully all will be well, but if you've still got bubbles coming out then bleed it again.

cheers, i may have over tightened it then as i used pliers to undo and tighten the bleed screw:( but will do as you say and will let you no later.
cheers

Does that mean you've damaged the threads then  cos
If you've just damaged the bleed screw thread then a new bleed screw would be best.
But if you've damaged the top hose thread, I think you may have to consider a new top hose. I'm not sure thread tape is a good idea, maybe as a temporary fix.

ok i think i will get a new top hose and bleed screw if it doesn't come with one thanks anyway, will let you no later.

both my top and bottom hose i ordered from paddocks came today ( genuine land rover ones ) so will get them done tomorrow, aswell as the issue i have with the bleed screw leaking i intended to replace the top and bottom hoses anyway as we are going to cornwall in july so mite aswell get them done now while i have the chance, looking at the new top hose as been said before there are two enlinement marks on the top hose and bleed screw but looking at the one thats still fitted doesn't so looks like i have overtightened it.

throw the old top and bottom hoses in the boot or under the front seats for emergency use.;)

I carry a spare set in mine.

replaced the top and bottom hoses yesterday with no probs used jubilee clips instead of the clips that come with hoses then after bleading the system and running the engine till it reached normal temp i decided to leave the fan off and see how it goes, took it for a short run and it felt like it was a bit quicker, just checked and toped up the level this morning and going out shoping later and see how it is.
