My TD5 starts up in morning on 4 cylinders and runs roughs for around 2 miuntes then all clears and runs on 5. It starts straight after the coil light going out, idle's fine just when you rev it you can here it missing. It does smoke alitle too when reving up when cold, (greyish colour) It has used alittle coolant too since the bad weather.

Also found that the inside steams up/condensates up quickly too.

Are these engine common for heads cracking, head gasket failure or heater matrix's going down ?

Glowplugs are fitted to 4 of the 5 cylinders, so on a cold morning it would take a bit longer for all 5 to be running evenly. When temperatures were minus 6c, mine would take up to a minute before all 5 were running smoothly. Cant answer your other questions, but there are others on here with far more knowlege than me that can ;)

I concur with Nigel. Mine starts on 4 cylinders and then idles for a little while, though usually only a few seconds before the 5th cylinder kicks in. On the condensation, I do find in this weather that I have to have the heating vents on `windscreen' sometimes for several minutes as breathing mists up the windscreen - I unfortunately dont have a heated one.

It may be something else, but what you've described is not completely `beyond the pale' of normality for a TD5 on a really cold morning.

Hope this helps,
Ian

The drain valve in your heater intake is probably blocked allowing the heater to draw in water. Classic symptoms are windscreen misting when on demist setting. It is a small rubber flap type valve on the bottom of the intake box and can get blocked with dirt. Squish it a few times with your fingers and flush it through with a watering can. When you SLOWLY pour water into the intake it should make your feet wet.

First Disco so it did panic me abit the way it started up, happy to have it cleared it's pretty normal for a Disco, eases my mind abit!

Intake box being the air filter intake box or heater box ?

Sod knows why i wrote that! I aint that daft, must of had an off day.

So if i pour water down the heater intake (scuttle panel) and it DOES NOT come into the foot well, that flap could be 'bunged' up ? Can i access siad flap from under the passenger side of the dash or is it else where ?

Unfortunately the first two are fairly common. As you will see if you do a search on this site. If you are not losing coolant you are probably OK though.
