D1 1997 300tdi edc autobox gremlins

Hello
Hoping you guys can help me again please?
All fine until today but now there's a 2-3 second delay when pulling away from rest (5 seconds or so on a hill start). Once it gets going all is ok with changes up and down at correct speeds etc. i.e. no slippage. The only other issue (may or may not be coincidence ) is sluggish to start when warm whereas used to start with a flick of the key. So maybe electronics rather than the box itself?

This is what Ashcroft Transmission states:

”When I start my Automatic Range Rover in the mornings it takes a while to engage drive, it has not always done this. This has become worse in the cold weather. Why?

It sounds like you need to change the filter. In the cold weather, i.e when the oil is cold and more viscous, if the filter is partially blocked it will take some time for the pump to draw oil through it. Once the oil becomes warm it flows more freely and can pass through the filter more easily. Hence the problem only occurs when the oil is cold. To remedy this problem your filter needs to be changed. This should be done sooner rather later to reduce the possibility of damage to the autobox, by the clutches 'slipping' during this slow engagement.”

There’s no electronics involved with the auto gearbox.

Far more simple than that, change the fluid and filter, do it once, drive for about 500 or so miles and then do it again, should prolong it's life a while longer.

Thanks. Mine is troublesome pulling away (drive and reverse) when hot or cold though.

At what rpm does she "pick up" and go?

Approx 2k but it's not just a case of hitting 2k and you're off, the delay even when it's hit 2k is a full couple of seconds

Have you checked the gearbox oil level? dipstick is at the back of the engine.

Thanks for suggestion to check gearbox oil, yes I've done that and seems ok.

However new development today I started it from cold and there's a distinct misfire and the engine is slow to respond to the pedal so I'm thinking EDC issues. I'm now trying to arrange for someone to come round to plug in a diagnostic kit.

The standard OBD reader won't work as the 1996 D1 OBD port is not compatible with standard OBD

Just Testbook or Rovacom.

Thanks. Not sure which bit of kit my guy uses but a while back he diagnosed a stuck wastegate using it so it must be compatible.

Just Testbook or Rovacom.

My Hawkeye worked on my EDC ..... but then I took the EDC orft cos it was broked - god knows how many fault codes it would throw if was powered up

To conclude this thread it transpired I had bought a dodgy tank of fuel at myour local supermarket filling station. Drained and refilled with 90 litres of ESSO Premium and within 10 miles all symptoms had disappeared!
