I've got the above vehicle and the transmission temperature warning light is coming on as soon as 2 miles of mixed speed driving, even in the recent cold spell.

The oil level is on the mark and although dull, it certainly isn't a burnt red, however, the transmission tunnel does get quite hot (a lot hotter than I remember my dad's V7 auto RRC got, as he'd have his chocolate bars on the tunnel, they'd melt if I tried that). I decided to do an oil and filter change, also change the oil in the transfer box, as I hadn't check the level yet, then thought might as well do the axles too, especially as I've no idea when it was last done (glad I did, as the oil in the rear axle was a light milky brown, trnsfer box was black and front axle was fairly clear).

After I changed the oil and filter, I took it for a test drive - 1/2 mile 30mph, 2 mile 70mph, 2 mile 50mph, 1/2 mile 40mph, 1 mile 30mph - as I went into teh 40mph road, the trans temp warning light came on and sure enough, the trans tunnel was warm enough to melt a chocolate bar again, so when I got home, I put my fingers through the grille to feel the oil cooler, which was too hot to touch for long, so looks like oil is going round.

I can't see anywhere that says what temp the trans warning light comes on and when I drained the trans oil, about 5ltr came out (was hot prior to draining), I couldn't see any capacity in the Haynes comic, but the system we use for work said 9.1ltr refil, however, I only filled to the mark on the dipstick, ran the engine and selected each gear to get the oil round everything, then back to park, in all, I refilled with about 6ltr up to the mark. How much oil does everyone put in after an oil and filter change?

I'm starting to think about changing the pipes and cooler, in case there's a partial blockage somewhere, as well as the switch, so short of a replacement gearbox, I've done what I can, if it still persists, maybe I should look to convert to manual?

Has anyone else experienced similar and what sorted it out?

Ok, the quantity of fluid for your auto box is to the top mark on the dip stick, and no more measured of course when cold follow the usual moves with the selector.
The temp switch has been known to faulty, so being some what inexpensive replace a new one and remove that possibility.
9ltr is with an empty gearbox and torque converter, but when draining the gearbox the torque coverer still remains full, hence only being able to drain 5ltr or so.

Also an auto transmission tunnel does get hot, due to the gearbox, t box and exhaust system.

usually about 4 .5 litres on an oil change

Cheers guys. this is only my second auto since I've beendriving, previous was an old Cavalier, so can't even compare, as totally different vehicles.

I'll get a switch on order next then and go from there.
