Hi to all, I have been looking at various threads and can't find anything really specific about this black plastic device. My saga started in october on 300tdi disco 1 1994 when the turbo failed after coming home from whitby. Oil loss and smoke everywhere, grey white in colour and a really bad smell. I got a second hand turbo and issue seemed to be partially solved, still smoked from cold, grey white in colour so then took off the head. The engine still ran ok, was starting ok and no loss of power, bit of a misfire on start up was all but loads of smoke. Head removal showed gasket failed and leak between oil feed and number 1 cylinder. Checked everything and fitted new stem seals and Elring gasket, previous one was a britpart, which seem to have issues. Less smoke on startup and seemed to have improved but still misfire. rebuilt the turbo with an ebay kit and replaced and again improved, still smoke when hot on over run after warmed up. Checked timing and adjusted and better still, almost.
Changed the injector nozzles and this fixed the misfire, still smoke when hot and working hard i.e. up local steep hill. decided this was diesel burning in the exhaust due to the smell
When testing between changes rocker was pressurised again, left to cool down ran ok.
Now the smoke was def oil burning as blue and the smell was oil. Ordered a new cyclone valve and connecting pipes plus breather pipe as seemed to suggest breather problems, fitted last night and then took the top off the old unit. There is a thin rubber membrane in the lid of the valve so it isn't just a series of plastic vanes in the housing. mine has a hole in the membrane. this is to control the rocker pressure and will release gasses to the turbo inlet. Mine was a more direct connection to sump= pressure and stops the turbo drain working and puts oil into the inlet = smoke. So don't assume cleaning with paraffin will sort the cyclone valve. For around £12 replace it. i will let you know if this has sorted the last issue, sorry for war and peace post, this has driven me mad so ignore any small mushroom clouds on Derby/notts border :mad2:

run engine with cyclone removed, sump and rocker cover are directly linked through cam galler ,so it would sound like ,you have other isue poor ring/bores,head gasket ,damage to piston from poor injector, unopening valves etc
