Hi all,
I've trawled the forums a little on here to see if i can find an answer but im still not sure.
Symptoms:
When driving my 1993 RRC LSE on full steering lock, right or left, the wheels seem to bind up and not want to turn. (The TC light flickers on at this point)
i'm replacing the swivel balls on the car in a couple of weeks time but wanted to see if i should be replacing any other parts while i've got it on the ramp... someone suggested it could be the Constant Velocity joint causing my issues and i could obviously replace those while i have it all apart.

Any help appreciated
 
Sounds very much like the CV joint. you can test it easily enough. jack 1 front wheel up and try to turn it slowly with the wheel brace. it will be stiff but should turn. if not the Gearbox CV is not working
 
Ok, sounds like all roads are pointing to the VC unit... Much of a mare to replace?
you can change it in situ ,it sits in the front output housing on the transfer box ,if you leave g/box in neutral and jack one front wheel up it should turn slowly using a bar ans socket on the wheel nut if it wont vc is seized, rtc 6044 is the vc same as used in p38s as well
 
Do not by a used VCU unless you know for a fact (unlikely) that it's a good 'un. I made that mistake a few years ago & bought one from a reputable breakers but once fitted it was obviously no better than the original. I managed to get my money back for the unit but was still well out of pocket on labour & carriage costs. Lesson learned, buy cheap - buy twice :rolleyes:
 
Hmmmm... good point.
I spoke with Ashcroft Transmissions and they do a reconditioned transfer box but it's a rather painful £690 delivered (with exchange of the old unit).
I tested it again today and it's 100% scrubbing the tyres, the wheel does not turn at all when i raise it on the jack and stick a bar on the wheel so it has to be buggered.
