After having an air spring fitted to the driver front there is now oil/grease all over and down the side of the tyre - a right gooy mess. There is also a mild grating noise. Also the dash display says 28.4 mph. I wonder what is actually wrong and is it safe to drive to the garage 30 miles away and will more damage be done.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
 
Photo not showing up.....but if the CV has gone, drive at own risk, it could jam up and land you in a ditch!

The CVs are in a gaiter, if the CV has broken up and punctured the gaiter, then odds on it is unwise to drive....

Will try to upload photo and thanks - history is that while driving the air suspension collapsed suddenly onto bump stops and dash said drive no more than 30 mph - then found driver front air spring had burst - wonder when replacing it if mechanic could have damaged something as noticed the slight grating and oily mess about 30 miles later.
 
As per Saint possibly,
If boot is still secured properly on the CV then it's just split but may be a shattered joint from the rapid deflation at speed.
Another scenario is that the boot simply unseated partially from the sealing lip beneath the large clip during the deflation but wasn't obvious to mech and has now simply detached completely and spewed it's guts of grease.
Boot needs cleaned and assessed for splits but I'd pull boot back and thoroughly check joint.
Grating may be dirt/rust that has worked it's way between wheel sensor and the bearing via the gloop.
Speedo could play up as one of the front abs sensors also is speed sensor, but I was under impression it was passenger (n/s) that does that function.
Talk to garage.

First check that a wheel bearing has not collapsed by jacking up the front wheel and see if there is any play in the wheel bearing by rocking the wheel in and out at the top then check CV joints
 
I would go with the knackered CV joint. Sudden pressure coming down all one sided would have forced it home at speed and not in a measured fashion. My guess would be the needle rollers & retaining ring have come adrift and got chewed up as the shaft was spinning. Then sharp, broken parts will have been forced through the boot, spreading grease around due to centrifugal forces.

Don't drive it til it's fixed :eek:
 
Needle rollers?

In most CV joints I've done, there are needle rollers.... It occurs to me that the L322 may have an Rzeppa joint system with balls :rolleyes:

They tend to be a lot stronger unless the boot has been compromised for a good few months (less so in dusty climates).
