Phil it is clear you are the most knowledgeable on the forum with this type of issue. Can I please ask for some advice on my transmission problem on a '02 td6 L322.
Trans Fail Safe Mode message just appeared yesterday. The drive quickly failed a short while after message appeared. engine revs were running high as presumably the drive was slipping followed shortly after with No drive in forward or reverse gear.
I can turn off the engine and then immediately restart and drive is normal, even working under reasonably brisk acceleration. It also works again in reverse.
But after a short time (5 mins approx) of using the car the drive starts slipping and quickly there is no drive at all. Again there is no drive in reverse.
Switching to manual does not effect it. It seems that I am able to change gears from the dash digits for gear display switching up and down.
Again if I stop the engine and restart I can continue moving with normal acceleration and the gear box works fine for a few more mins.
If I delay the restart for a few mins it does seem that I get longer time at normal operation. Perhaps it is cooling down slightly.
This just happened yesterday suddenly and without any prior issues.

Got home eventually and have the following info
Voltage is 14.18v and when I read the faults I got the following;
37 Gear monitor 5 fault
36 Gear monitor 4 fault
CAN bus transfer box timeout ( Sorry I can't recall the error code number)

Also the fault described above is now more immediate in so far as the fault message appears on the dash and almost immediatly there is a loss of drive to both forward and reverse if that is selected. Again a engine off with key removal then restart will bring the car back to normal for another short while. I was only driving slowly around the yard yesterday evening so there was no hard acceleration. The time of working normally also seems to be much shorter now. By this I mean it will display the fault within only a few mins of starting. Finally there also seems to be a whining sound from gearbox when reverse is selected which was not there earlier yesterday.
Any advice appreciated
Regards
John

I don't think Phil touches the GM box.
Any oil in the box? Usually it's the lock up clutch in the torque converter that fails which knackers the box. The valve block also fails.. The box rarely lasts much more than 80K miles.

Gear monitor?
Sounds like speed sensors in the box, à primary and final drive sensor.
Some of the mercs boxes monitor input and output from the shafts and correlate the info.
