I having probs with my 99 1.8 Petrol Freelander. Ive done a search but cant find anyone with a similar prob.

Its recently been in at a stealership to have a wheel problem sorted.

However whilst driving up the M6 yesterday it juddered a couple of times.

A little later the engine juddered again then cut out, at the same time a loud knocking noise from the undercarriage happened and stopped when i pulled into the hard shoulder.

I tried starting it up again and it wouldnt, it would turn over ok though.

I got out and checked to see if it had boiled over which it hadnt, checked oil for HGF and that was fine, checked driveshafts and prop shafts and all seemed ok.

Then after 10 mins it started again and has been fine for about 60 miles.

Now, I am thinking its possibly a fuel (prob pump) problem but the knocking has thrown me a bit.

Can anyone out there shed any light on what it may be??

Cheers

The wheel problem was a loud knocking sound which was fixed by replacing all 4 tyres.

It had 3/4 of a tank of fuel in when it happened.

The knocking sound it made when cut out seemed to be speed related but only happened for a few seconds whilst coming to a stop. It has been fine since and has drives perfectly.

I think Aussielander has answered the cutting out problem, blocked breather tube in the fuel tank, more obvious when you've a full tank of fuel.

Worthwhile checking fuel filter and pump as MHM said.

The knocking noise is probably your drop links, very common, possibly worn anti roll bar bushes?

This sounds similar to my problem - see recent post loss of power/drive

Mine only happens when have finished a long motorway run, or been crawling in traffic a long time.

However last time I opened the fuel cap to let air out, and it didn't help, so maybe it's the pump?

Check your CV
No you're not applying for a new job.
The Constant Velocity joint at the front of the propshaft where it connects to the IRD flange.
Can make a hell of a noise and cause juddering when it's gone.
Replacement is a whole front propshaft I'm afraid.

Drop links tend to show up over speed bumps and cobblestones that work the suspension rapidly.

I've had both go at some point over the years. My money's on the CV

Surest way to check is to undo the 6 bolts and feel for play in the joint.

Oh yeah
Blocked breather. Next time you fill up after a long journey, listen for any hissing or sucking noise when you undo the filler cap.

Luckily it still has 2 1/2 months left on its warrantly so its going into Landrover tomorrow and they can fix it at whatever cost.

I'll try and pursuade them to replace the propshaft under the warranty. Fingers crossed that they will do before it totally goes (probably a day after the warranty expires!!)

Thanks guys
