Hi Guys and Girls

Very Merry Xmas to you all!

My poor P38 is sick again, appox two weeks ago she started to what I can only describe as jump when running, almost like a spilt second shut down or fuel starvation. I found that after fitting a new fuel filter the drain at the bottom was loose and sucking air in, so tighten and thought no problem. Only work recently was 6 new glow plugs, oil, air fuel filter.( two weeks ago)
She ran fine for a few days, until today with no warning she just stopped, dash lights came on, gearbox fault in window( presuming because it was in gear(auto)), braked to a halt by side of road.
Into Park, ignition off the back on a re-started, drove off.
5 mins later when backing onto drive same problem?
Help please Its a 2001 P3A 2.5d:confused::confused::confused:

Gearbox fault comes up if the car is moving with the engine stopped.
Diesels normally only stop due to lack of fuel or possibly low battery voltage or an electrical problem, check the under bonnet fuse box for signs or smells of burning, swap the ignition relay (I know it's a diesel) for another one of the same colour.
Check the in tank pump is working, was it low on fuel when it stopped? Normally even if the in tank pump has failed they will keep running but if the fuel was very low it may be a problem.
Otherwise, diagnostics as it may be a problem with the FIP fuel quantity servo. Wammers is the man for that.

thanks, tank is half full or empty depends on your glass!
Is the FIP inside the pump or an external part?
Still in your neck of woods long way for wammers this time, I may pop up your way to plug her in, if you think its worth it?:bounce::bounce:

You have 2 pumps, one in the tank and the high pressure injection pump (FIP) on the block.
First step is to check the in tank pump, drop the filter, put a bowl underneath, pull the pump relay and connect the slot that is at 90 degrees to the others to the battery positive, you should get 180ml in 10 seconds if I remember correctly. No fuel means the pump is dead or a wiring problem but pump failure is common.
Also, when refitting, make sure the filter is really seated and tight or it may let air in.

You are welcome to come up and put it on diagnostics.

Thanks will try the above, wondering how may be linked to having the plugs replaced as problems started after, in fact i forgot on the way home from having plugs fitted the engine management light came on twice for approx 30 secs but not seen since?
Bon noel

If the MIL lamp came on, it could be the connector to injector number 4 or the crank position sender, either will log a fault.
