cutting out after 100 yards? help!

hey as you may know i work for a company called black diamond in warrington we recondition gearboxs, axles transfer box and recently getting into the ecu side of things............ iv had a customer on the phone with a 2005 defender td5 that starts fine and will drive for 100 yards or so and suddenly cuts out? the car wont start for a while buit when it does start it does the same thing????? he believes it to be a ecu problem and said the ecu is under the seat.. has anyone got any ideas to what this could be? could it be something as silly as a security feature and the immobiliser isnt disengaging entirely?? or is the ecu giving up the fight? any ideas appreciated

are there any other symptoms or noises?

It could be literally anything from a bad earth to a fooked ECU.

Is the handbrake/cable getting hot (bad earth)? Is there a smell of burning? Is the fuel pump noisey (air)? Is there oil contamination in the red plug on the ecu (leaking injector harness)? Are the connections on all the fuses under the seat good and clean (corroded or loose fuses/relays are a common problem)? Does anything show up as strange on a diagnostic computer (injector imbalance etc)? Are the turbo hoses all good (they are prone to delaminating)? When was the last time it had a fuel filter (TD5's like their fuel)? Are there an signs of a fuel leak from the regulator or signs of wear/leaking from the pipes along the chassis rails and fuel filter housing (all common faults)?

A bit more info would help.
