Right I've got a 1998 d1 300tdi. When I put on the cruise control it seems to work OK but if I'm sitting at 50mph it drops down to 45mph ish then accelerates back up to 50mph then down then up no matter what I do it just keeps on doing this.
I have changed all the pipes as these had gone rotten.

Mine's a little bit like that. I don't use it so often now as it seems to work on a go/no go principle. what I mean is that if you're driving yourself you can allow for hills and descents and maintain the power by fine adjustment with ya foot, but the cruise control will keep to the speed within a few MPH either way, but like I say... it seems to power on or off to do it.

I remember that my TDi was a bit like that - bit of a shock coming from a petrol Cherokee with CC that was spot on. Even the TD5 isn't as good as the Jeep was (in this respect ONLY, I hasten to add). I wonder if it's harder to fine-tune it on a diesel engine?

It does sound like a diesel thing.
Cruise is at it's best when its mated to a V8 with an auto box, press resume and the box changes down and off we go just like we are in kickdown back up to the preset speed :D

You just can't help yourself can you - got to have a dig at diesels.:D:D

The cruise on my TDi 300 auto worked perfectly well enough, it just wasn't that sophisticated so it did vary a little.

Is yours an auto by the way? If it is then the cruise won't work that well until Torque Converter lockup is established, above 52mph. Once it's above this speed, you effectly have direct drive so it works much better.

On my current TD5 the cruise works much better and is generally more refined in the way it operates. On the TDi if you were going downhill and then swooping up again it was a bit jerky. On the TD5 it handles things much better.

Hi dave, after 24 and a bit years with a V8 (started with a TVR) I won't be changing now unless it's a LR RRS DV8 :violin:

I see what you mean about that new V8 diesel by the way, it appears to be the best of all worlds - loads of smooth creamy power plus not tooo bad on juice.

Yes, I've convinced myself, off down the shops then, "Oh was I asleep? Hope I didn't do anything bad??"

In view of the fact that D2's (I'm convinced about them now:eek:) are so much better than the previous series, are they really viable to run if you lpg them?? Not that I'm looking for one you understand, my TD5 is the best car I've ever had and that includes my 911 cabriolet !!!

I was really tempted on buying one the last of the D2's. But the Chateau and the Vinyard must came first. ....I Must Wake Up...

No the D1 will see me out now, unless I win the Loto ... but then if I did would I get a Land Rover ????

Regards

I've just been reading about the Discovery 4 TDv6 3ltr, that sounds like a powerplant and a half - only dreaming you understand :D:D
