Hey there, quick bit of history. 1974 series 3, SWB 2 and a quarter litre diesel.

Runs great, and recently passed MOT with no major issues after replacing the shocks all around, brand new springs all around and the rear crossmember has been cut off and replaced with a pristine new one (old one was badly corroded)

The "creaking" sounds were present before but only noticeable during green laning at angles which put pressure more on the rear. I doubt its a problem just want to make sure, better safe than sorry?

My theory is that its the springs themselves bending and stretching, or the rear spring hangars moving back and forth as the springs lengthen and shorten.

Anyone else had the same sounds or any clue as to the real culprit (if there is one)

Cheers - Wayne

Yes Wayne my shorty does that. I get the odd creak and thunk sound when turning corners and the body rolls a bit. Going in and out of driveways gives a groan and thunk noise. i suspect its the chassis bushes? Ill rerplace all that when I get me parabolix sprungs.

Could loosening the rear hangars help? It did it again last night, very loud and deafenning as usual but no loss to drive, again its only when a lot of weight is transferred to the rear on one side.

Should I loosen the hangars at both end by a notch? To allow more movement, as presumable the springs being bent would keep it tensioned and allow the movement whÉn neccesary?

Put some oil on the shackle bolts they is just dry and rustie

Tried oiling your springs, clear spray grease is good, i have heard people also say motorcycle aerosol chain spray grease is good as well.

I'll grab my can of "x ring spray" in the morning, clean off the hangars on the rear and give it a good soaking, I'll do it again when I'm back from work in the evening to allow time for it to set in.

Cheers for all the help and input I'll let you know if it helps!

Right I know I'm digging up old threads but I just thought I'd let you know of my own stupidity

On wednesday I was out on a lane, which involves quite a good section in where two wheels sometimes are barely on the ground, and again I hear the sound and feel quite a difference in power (low range selected) so I jumped out (after sticking the handybrake on and pulling out of gear obviously much to the girlfriends horror that I was legging it from her)

Anyway looked under the wheel arch and it was just rubbing against under where the bench seat is on one side, and the opposite side it was (as you can imagine) just hanging there at an angle, so I've sorted that out and now I know that I need a stopper of sorts
