Crawling away from standstill problem

I have just bought a P38 2.5 DHSE (1998) Auto. When pulling away from standstill it crawls away for about 5 seconds then jumps into life and away we go.
I have manually selected 1st gear on the box but this makes no difference at all.
Has anybody come across this problem before?
The vehicle has no Powerbox or Superchip but I will probably be fitting one.

A friend of mine has said the same. I shall do so. Did you use the standard Lucas atf or a particular grade?

No problem. The local motor factors deal with Lucas so I shall get some there. Thanks for the offer though.
