The last month I've had problems with my defender not starting properly. Sometimes it turns over fine, other times it just clicks, so I try again, multiple times and it maybe takes 3 times or sometimes 7, it just clicks, then it eventually fires over on a lucky key turn..

Any suggestions, I used to have the odd similar problem when I drove through big puddles, but its doing it now even in the constant dry, could this be an earth problem or wiring? I thought it could also be the starter, how can I check this?

Its also started very randomly cutting out even when driving and starting back up within seconds, its done this a handful of times, but sometimes on startup its a little smoky, its never been like this before...

Any help or advice would be great
Thanks

Could be battery or any of the main feed wire connections. But IMHO its the solenoid on the starter motor, that is not connecting properly most of the time.

Check connections first, starter can be stripped off and tested on the floor with jump leads. If it still clicks new starter is needed.

Then its defo the starter solenoid contacts. Piece of p!ss to change. Hardest part is getting the starter out and back again. Done more than a few of them over the past five years and everyone has had the same symptoms.
