hi ive not long bought a discovery 300tdi,i changed the antifreeze a couple of weeks ago.i flushed it out loads of times due to the water being brown, the missis has been using it with no probs except a gurgleing noise behind dash and the heater being a bit crap.anyhow she gets home from work today and it chucks all the coolant out of the expansion tank.temp was normal tho she said.any ideas please

head gasket ,but check rad gets hot all over system is full by removing bungs and are over flowing ,expansion tank level isnt necessarily level in engine

i did undo the top bung when i changed the antifreeze, the hoses are not rock hard like its building up pressure, and it dont get hot

are you sure it dont get hot or just not on guage ,air/comb gas around temp sender will make it read low ,have you checked 3 way one way valve (little bleed pipes from rad to tank and thermostat housing ,i still think gasket but was it age or fault made it go

hope its not the headgasket, also why would the water be so brown.ive topped water up and will see if it does it again.do these have any probs with expansion caps needing changeing.thanks for help

I had no pressure in hoses replaced exp tank cap and got pressure in hoses.

If you've got air in it that might cause overheating and of course that can blow the head gasket but it might still be ok, just keep trying to get any air out and your heater working if it still over pressurized Or overheating I agree with other post gasket is gone.

Will be a air lock make sure u bleed the system properly was it just Brown water u drained out
yer the water was realy brown and still is even after flushing it loads of times.i took the stat out today will wasent open but the engine was hot.went to fit the new un but it was wrong.so ive knocked the centre out the old un

Sounds like an air lock how did you bleed the system?
ive tried to bleed it a few ways.filling the expansion tank untill water comes out of the two plastic bleed screw things and tried filling it through them.hope its not headgasket.it was fine untill i changed coolant:(

Well it should work try this method if your is different.
Make sure the header tank it as high as poss a brick under the drivers wheel can help and if need be unbolt the tank and lift it up as far as it will go so it is higher than any other hose and wedge it in place.
Run the engine up to temp with the cap off and the heater on full heat then raise the revs a bit to get the water flowing squeeze the hoses to get any air out and this should do the trick. Its worked for me on loads of different cars for 25 years.

yer ive filled the expansion tank to the top left it run with cap off then drained a bit out and put cap back on.the temp gauge has been moving up and down aswell but never into the red

always fill coolant bottle to mark. put cap on then fill rad and then thermostat housing. relace plastic plugs with brass ones. preferably those that allow yu to bleed the system when hot & pressurised.
