Coolant system Pressure Test pump/kit

Afternoon

Does anyone out there know where I can get a Coolant system Pressure Test pump/kit for an L322

I have done some google and ebay to no real avail. It seems that you have to buy the full kit for everything.

Just want a simple pressure test pump for my L322 and a cheap cost.

Does anyone know

Full kit is all you will get and they can be pretty expensive depending on what you choose. There is cheap stuff on eBay for around £50-60 quid. You won't get one for a specific car.

As heath robinson is my friend, i think i would buy a coolant cap of the bay for £8, drill a hole through it fix in and seal a bolt in tyre valve for £2 and pump it up using a foot pump with a gauge on it and then i would check it with a little digital pressure gauge, just cos i like the look of them, after a period of time to see if it's losing pressure.

i have only had a quick look so you would have to check the dimensions and take a look at your own cap to see if it is feasible to drill through one as i am not sure if the pressure relief valve would cause a problem

I think that's what you are trying to achieve, i did something similar with an oil filler cap when i wanted to check my crankcase vacuum using a manometer.

You could also over complicate things using the sealey pressure gauge but you would have to plumb it in some how.

A system static tester does a lot more than just pressurise the system to check for leaks. It can also tell you of over pressure. And test caps for correct function.

Guess what I did
I had an old cap drilled a hole in it removed the pressure/therm then chatted up the local tyre place and got some free valves lol.

Hey presto a pressure tester. and Land Rover kindly place a electronic tyre pump in my boot. So all is good

MUST BE TOLD I DID THIS BEFORE YOU SAID LOL ;-)

Looks like someone has ballsed up the electronic pump it only shows 0.0 PSI when pimping so presume just pump for a minute should be enough pressure. I do remember 30 secs or so to go from 33 to 34 PSI so I will gauge it as 30 seconds per PSI ..Bit of a bodge job but ..... either that or go buy a new pump

Question so how much PSI 1 2 3 ? cant need much surely

This will end in tears, what point is a pressure tester without a bloody pressure gauge? You are looking for drops in pressure to find leaks and rises in pressure with engine running to diagnose other faults. A pressure tester without a pressure gauge is as useful as tits on a Mars bar.

You do need a pressure gauge and probably set to about 20 psi and then wait to see if it drops i guess but the other thing you need to keep in mind is the stat will be closed if its cold and if its hot you will see an increase in pressure anyway but i wouldnt run it up with your pressure tester in place as it will most likely blow it out.
You can probably activate the stat manually or remove it
Think thats vague enough ...

10 to 15 psi is more than enough to check for leaks engine off. You don't put any pressure in the system to check for pressure rises with engine running.

As a RAC patrol we carried these testers on board, Sykes Pickavant was the company. It does test the pressure cap with the right adaptors. Since leaving the RAC I have used the pressure cap with tyre valve and a foot pump used as a chest expander (mind your nipples !) You do not need to over pressure the system, most leaks will show up in seconds. The digital gauge is a good idea, but DO NOT over pump. I prefer to use the manual method as you can so easily overdo the pressure for a thumb load and blow other things like O rings.
