Checking over the R/R engine yesterday in time for the snow, making sure everything was topped up !

The water level seemed low so i topped it up too the arrow as in the book! Ten minutes later the level had dropped again.
Topped it up, and had to go for a short drive...the needle was on the red when i arrived home?
There is no leaking from anywhere, so where's the water/antifreeze going?
Only had the R/R a short while so not too clued up on the workings of the engine side of things.....Was told that there may be an air block...So took the cap off, left the engine running topped her up once again but instead of level dropping the coolant started bubbling!!
Would the thermostat be knackerd? If so where, do i find it?
Any help would be appreciated........Thanks.

Check the colour of your oil. If it's grey or gloopy then water is mixing with it. If it's normal gold/ black (depends when last changed) then the water is most likely boiling off in the cyliders unless there is a leak that only shows under pressure. Cylinder head gasket(s) could be away combined with warped heads due to overheating. There are several threads on this subject already, most of which refer to slipped cylinder liners etc etc which is an engine swop job. How long have you had the car, how old is it, what size engine and was it a bargain price? Anyone on here will tell you what I have just said.

Only had the R/R for 2 weeks, 4.6 p38 Preg.

Had nothing but greif with it since buying for £3000.

Thanks for the Info.

This is what the guy put in his advert......................

The manifold was blowing further investigation proved it to be the head gasket had gone between the cylinder and the edge of the block, so no oil and water mixing or over heating i have had the gaskets replaced with composite ones and got photos of the liners as proof they havent slipped.

As, i think, the liner height shud be 5 thou above the block, how is he gonna show that on a photo?

you'd prolly only measure this by feeling it with yer thumb nail. or specialist measureing kit, not a feckin mobile phone picture!!! :D:D:D:D

check to see if yer carpets are wet if so and its not just water from yer footwear (would feel sticky and taste sweet as in antifreeze) its the o rings on the heater matrix.

easy fix but i'm told a bag of a job to get to.

you can just connect the pipes at the bulkhead in the engine bay. this will keep you rolling till you can get it fixed although it'll get mighty cold in the car.

check water pump at front of engine, also check the hoses underneath the front of the engine. check all hose joints for signs of 'scaling' where water has been. check beneath air intake/throttle housing.

also check the expansion cap is fitted correctly and very tight. if you have left it a little loose you can loose lots of water this way.

you will be as well getting a hydrocarbon test done as soon as practical. even if just to confirm no leakage into pots/from pots!

Just looked at the ebay description. Hate to say but I wouldn't have bought it, too many excuses e.g. Only had it 6 months, no history "but I found it" (or was it made up). Anyway look to the positives, you own it and need to get it sorted! Worth putting to an independent specialist to get the once and for all opinion. It may just be a simple seeping hose or cap and the coolant evaporating before you can see where.

Dont look like they have slipped in the pics but its too hard to tell, plus if they didnt do the headgaskets properly then it wont have worked!

Poor you!
