Dear members

Im new here, originating from Belguim.
(Excuse me for my poor English)

I’m currently owning a Defender 90 TD5 MY2006 with 117000Km’s (73000 miles) on it.

Last month I fitted a bigger intercooler onto my Defender. So I took the radiator of and drained the entire system.
After fitting the intercooler I bled the engine, warming it up on idle (waiting for the operating temperature, let it cool down over night and refill at the morning after.
The next day I accidentialy broke of the bleeding screw (tensioned it to hard using a screw driver, stupid decision).

Fixed it using superglue (was not leaking after a few testdrives) because I had to make a trip the next day of 160MI.
Made it there and back home. A couple of days later I decided to change the top hose because I was feeling bad about my “easy fix”. Replaced the top hose bled the engine & checked for leaks.

top hose was leaking at the connection on the water temp sensor. The spring clip holding the hose was “loose” , I could move the hose quarter a turn while connected to the fitting . So I decided to use a new strap that is retightable (worm wheel). Worked for a drive or 2
, still leaking. So I cleaned the connection (debris from old coolant, not a lot of corrosion). Got that sorted out, went out for a drive to drive it warm, no leaks at first sight.
The next morning I noticed a puddle under the car.

I checked every connection and I noticed its now leaking from the thermostat.
I’m not sure if it’s properly attached to the thermostate because its a real pain in the a** to get the spring clip and hose on properly.
Now leaking more than before, everytime i turn the bleed screw out it makes steam, with some little bubbles, is this normal? Also the hoses are hard but pressable

My Defender is not tuned ( std ECU) the wastegate is still at 13 threads, the only upgrades are the bigger intercooler & EGR delete.

Is this the result of a blown head gasket?
my2006 results in a 15p engine without the plastic dowels.

I also filled the expansion tank all the way up to check for bubbles in the system, it resulted into fine bubbles, like champagne but not that much, just 1 by 1 coming up ( fine bubbles).
Or would this be the result of bad bleeding and trapped air in the system.

Any other tricks to check a TD5 for a blown HG? I have the feeling that the cooling system is pressurised if it’s hot…

Thanks in advance.

attach pipes to thermostat on the bench or in your hand, then fit hose to radiator from below its easier and the only way to make sure the termostat pipes are on properly!
bubbles are normal, open screw till water comes out, then tighten, key eye on level and check n bleed again a few days later, it will be fine.

PS if you NOT renewing the pipes at the same time, always make sure spring clips go back in original position, the pipes will have moulded to them over time, move them and it wont always seat properly...

Hi, as long as the top hose gets rock solid when it's hot and tank's cap well tightened there is a gas leak into the coolant, which explains that it blows off the hoses where it can... might be head gasket or even worst crack in the head, find a garage where they can do a sniff test to confirm

Thank you for the replies!

I did what @KISSMYAURA told me, result no more leaks over there, now it started leaking at the radiator top hose….. but less than before.

my hoses are not that hard just squeezable when hot, you don’t have to use a lot of effort to press them.

@sierrafery I think the test will be the next step, is the result always trustable I heard that a TD5 is pretty hard to detect a failed HG…

It’s just weird that it didn’t leak before.

I have never had a sniff test work on a Td5 engine. Even with a known cracked head (we obviously found out afterwards) which was superheating the coolant from exhaust, it did not work. We tried a few different brands of kit, all the same.

Did you use the proper fluid too? My mechanic is using this brand https://www.lislecorp.com/specialty-tools/combustion-leak-detector-573 and worked on mine too when the head was cracked

We tried a few different ones and my own one is a Sealey one (basically Chinese with adult supervision). I would have thought the fluids are all the same but who knows. Maybe we'll give that kit a try. I've yet to see a Td5 with a head issue not driving though, they're pretty tough engines!

Got this figured out last month cause of the leakage: faulty top hose (fromAllMakes 4x4)
Got this from a local 4x4 repairshop.

Still no leaks after a month of driving

As you can see on the picture the hose they supplied me was not correct in lenght.

Was the faulty top hose one of the ones with the plastic sections?
