hello

new member here

ive been offered a freelander 1.8 non runner engine gone, was thinking of putting a rov 25 or 200 td lump in it.

i have been told its the same engine as the freelander diesel.

what i need to know is the gear box the same or will i have to get a diesel f/L box? also does anyone know if the are any thing else diff that i will need to change??

regards dean

Well well...

Seems we have three peops from MG-Rover.org forums :)

Welcome to Landyzone Dean.

I was thinking of putting my T series engine into my freelander before deciding to keep it 'K'

As far as I know the final drive on a diesel L series freelander is different to that of a petrol.

A t series turbo would certainly make an interesting freelander project :D

Regards,

Steve

P.s Have you sold the diesel coupe??

hello steve

all this talk of t series right over my head lol

thought it was a simple swop over plus loom and so on, getting loads of diff info of so called freelander experts/breakers lol

still got the tom running ok at the moment still few jobs to do but to cold to get under it at the moment.

Wont be converting mine over just yet -The K series has plenty of life left :)

Besides, I dont know enough about the L series to consider a swap.

I'm never quite sure what they mean by final drive. In the freelander Haynes they refer to the rear diff as final drive whereas I always revert back to 2wd and think of gearbox diff as final drive.

Good luck with your new project - be sure to post some pics when you get it done.

Regards,

Steve

the T series is the rover 220 engine - preferably the 220 Turbo from a "tomcat" the Rover 220 uses the PG1 box - the same as the 1.8K (and KV6 i think). the final drive is usually the diff+half-shafts - in fwd cars that is the gearbox/diff/half-shafts. In rwd its the diff and axle/half-shafts. In 4wd its both front and rear diffs/half-shafts.

So yu aint rong, Steve - if yu aint got rwd it can only be the gearbox diff!;)

good luck Bandit - its a good project - I just dont have a cheap hippoo and the time at the mo:( - Where abouts are yu based - change ya cp to show it :)

Bandit - yu mite like to read this

cheers for the info

but the way its going this project wont get off the ground, i have both a 25 and 200 td engines complete with looms gearbox's.
been talking to a few breakers who tell me diff things lol

one says gearbox the same just need transferbox plate for freelander other says not the same???? one says will need a f/l ecu other says not. anyone know of a vvc lump going cheap lol then might be a lpg conversion

my lad went to a visit to landrover and asked them, he has just recived a email saying that my 98 s reg has a bmw engine and box, is the vvc lump a bmw????? i thought it was a rover???

need help on this please

cheers dean:confused:

If its a 1.8 it shd be a "K" series Rover lump, as is the KV6, both made by Powertrain (I think). Not sure about the TD - think the early diesels were Rover and the later ones BMW, but somoene on here will know, categorically.

You're right Hatters, the early diesels are Rover lumps, and any TD4's are Beemer.RoverRon might be able to confirm this, are the 'L' Rover lumps Perkins designed/sourced/derivatives?

The New ones are French Pug stuff, so is Slobbery gonna get one now the lump comes from close to home? :p

ok so my freelander engine looks like the one that was in my 97 r reg tomcat ie vvc, so the freelander has the vvc will that be right? the vvc being a rover engine?

2) will the gear box fitted to a 25 and or 220 diesel be ok for a freelander?

see the problem is the freelander breakers i speak to tell me all sorts to convert from petrol to diesel.

i know a loom is needed any ideas what else will be required???

cheers again for your help

I spoke to an LR mechanic a few years back who told me about VVC hippos. I dont think they were official from the production line but more of an after-thought.

Get an engine number check, some of the peeps on MGR should be able to tell you when the engine was constructed and for what vehicle.

So long as you have the loom + ECU you shouldnt have any probs, pre-2001 for the VVC was MEMS 2J, the latter are MEMS 3.

Early dizzy caps were MEMS 1.9

ok
now just found out its not a vvc, the t**t i had it of put the vvc injector cover thing on the rear so that sorts that out.

going back to the boxes the pg1 in the diesel must fit as the casings are the same and prob be better as the torque for the diesel.

hopefully a expert from l/r will be calling me tomorrow so i can nail him to the floor with questions lol

watch this space.

cheers for all the info guys

 ok even more confused

spoke to another breakers this morning, who has now said the boxs will be ok. mentioned the wiring loom to him and he has told me that the 1.8 k series body loom is the same for both petrol and diesel?????

this just gets better and better, i cant see them being the same but he states he has put a diesel into petrol

any ideas folks?????
