Hello there from Japan, driving 2000 Discovery 2 here, I plan to convert my ACE (which failed and is very expensive to fix here) to non ACE. i can get all the part online. However, I need a manual so that y mechanic can tackle the job. Any ideas, where to get a manual? If It's impossible, I will be forced to have my ACE repaired here. Many thanks, Alan

You don't need a manual to swap solid arb's for the ACE system, it is all nuts and bolts apart from telling the BCU that the ACE system is no longer fitted.

Got one on the driveway now, V8 Disco 2 having the change done.

Depending on the engine, you'll need a different aux belt or a different belt AND an idler pulley to replace the ACE pump. V8's normally just need the different belt.

You need:

Drive belt and pulley if TD5, V8 just needs the different belt.
Solid ARB's front and rear
New ARB rubbers
New drop links
Single reservoir for power steering (not essential but looks right)

You'll probably need to cut the old drop links off as the threads are normally rusted solid.

Drain the fluid out of the system as much as possible and catch what's left when you undo the pipes.

More or less strip off the old and fit the new. You'll need a good set of axle stands, tools etc.

RAVE doesn't tell you how to do the job, but worth getting anyway.

Hi Alan it is normal courtesy and procedure to go to the "Introduce yourself" section before asking for help.

You wouldn't go up to a perfect stranger in the street and demand help before you've explained who you are and why you need help, would you?

Have a word with Andrew at Maverick4x4 Maverick 4x4 - Land Rover Defender & Discovery Accessories, Winching, Recovery & More

He can sell you all the parts as a kit if you need it - we worked together on it when I converted mine a few years back and I believe he's sold quite a few since. The only thing you'll need to consider is which rear anti-roll bar to fit. There are two, the SLS/air suspension one and the non SLS one. The SLS one is thicker but you can fit either one - if you buy genuine LR parts the bars come with the genuine bushes. I fitted the SLS one to my non SLS D2 to give me an upgrade and its worked fine. Hardly notice ACE is missing. From memory SLS bar is 32mm and non SLS is 19mm, but it was quite a long time ago. The front one is the same for SLS and non SLS.

Don't forget to tell your insurers ;)

The drop links are the same, but if its done a fair mileage its not expensive to replace them while you are at it.

Thank you all for the kind reply. it really helps. And sorry for not introducing myself. I'm an expat living in Nagano Japan. Currently, this is my third Discovery 2, 2000, We love it. We live in the mountains and it's a great vehicle. Not very many made like Discovery 2. The first went to my son and the second to my sister-in-law. Will try to keep it as long as possible, not many more around. I think the Discovery 2 is much better than the 3 and 4 visually.
Happy New Year to you all Rover people.

Hi Alan and welcome to Landy Zone, as well as the general Discovery section there is also an engines section that you may find interesting.

Removing or stabilising the ACE system can be done in several different ways as you have seen, it just depends how far you want to go.

Bare in mind that if you remove the system entirely, some of the parts such the valve block and pump have a value on the 2nd hand market to help reduce some of the costs of the new, non-ACE parts.

Happy and Healthy New Year to you and yours

Dave

Thank you for all the helpful hints. As I've never done this job (removing ACE and converting to Non ACE). I'd be greatful is somebody could tell me step by step what has to be done or where I can find the process online. I already have the list of parts I need to replace the ACE. I have the Discovery 2 Shop Repair Manual but it doesnt describe the switch process.

RAVE does not detail the removal of the system, and it is far too complex a job to detail step by step on a forum.

Any half-decent mechanic should be able to carry out the work, given the new parts, you just need to take out ALL of the ACE system:

Actuator and ARB front and rear
Valve block along the chassis on the driver's side (RHD vehicle)
Piping
Pump
Change the dual-reservoir to single reservoir
Take out the SLABS ECU
Tell the BCU that ACE is no longer fitted
Fit different aux belt on the engine, there are four different belts according to whether or not you have aircon and/or ACE fitted, you may need an additional idler pulley.

The movement sensors in the roof can be left in.

Peter

Agreed, however it does give step by step instructions on the removal of the pump, ecu, valve block, and front and rear actuators as well as the pipe work. This gave me enough information to allow me to tackle the job myself.

Yes, I'd agree with that, but given no manual it is still a fairly easy nuts and bolts job.
