After trying most of today to remove the 4 bolts from the fan pulley as I want to check the timing belt and only getting 3 out I'm beginning to think the pulley doesn't need removing as it will come off with cover? ?? Every how to I've found says remove it apart from one I've just found which says only remove the crank pulley? As much as I hope I don't need to remove it I'll be mighty ****ed off I've wasted a day trying. .. thanks in advance

What engine is this, then?
Check timing belt? If it is at its mileage, change it. If not leave well alone would be my suggestion.
Try holding the pulley with big Stilsons to remove the bolts.

Newly aquired vehicle and not sure when last changed... sorry it's a 300tdi

I assume you have left the serpentine belt fitted (to help hold the pulley still)? Also pull the radiator / intercooler out (doesn't take long) and that will let you have a 'straight on' approach to the bolt head so you can get an impact gun or Irwin extractor on to it, it will also make fitting a new belt kit a lot easier.

Cheers kwakerman, not had the rad out but got the other 3 out by using an impact gun, the last one just won't budge, tried irwin extractor and a 340nm impact gun, cannot believe it's still holding.

You need to be careful what you end up doing, if you bugger the flange that the bolt goes in to then it is a complete new front cover required. The belt change / inspection is a job that needs to be done as the costs involved with a belt failure can mount up (plus you would still have to get the cover off to fix it). If all else fails cut the bolt head off, once you then have the cover off you can look into drill / tapping the flange on the bench.

Cheers mate much appreciated.
The fact the flange stays on the cover was behind my thinking that the pulley didn't need removing ( unless there are cover bolts behind the pulley)
Cutting the head off the bolt was my next move, i'll keep you updated with my progress ( or lack of) :(:(

It might be worth having a look if you can get the cover off with the pulley still attached. I think there may be one bolt that might be covered by the pulley (about the 7 o'clock position) but you may be able to undo it a few turns at a time then pull the cover forward a bit then a few more turns.

I can confirm that the cover CAN be removed without the need to remove the fan pulley, all bolts easily accessible.... Thanks for your input guys.
